Seth Brower is a lion among masters meet directors
When saints are declared in masters track, meet directors go to the head of the line. They do the dirty work, usually unpaid, that gives the rest of us a chance to have fun and stay fit. My Saint Du Jour is Seth Brower of Texas, an M45 sprinter/hurdler/jumper who puts on throws competitions at the drop of a hat (or hammer).
I’m on his mailing list, and here’s what he sent out today — just one example of what Seth and his club do for masters track:
Greetings…Throwers and would-be throwers
We are having our last event of the year, a Throws Meet/Weight Pentathlon, on
Nov 19 at the Lions Fields, 1103 Justin Ln, Austin, Tx Also, if there is
sufficient interest, we will have a Throws Clinic the next day, Sunday Nov 20, same location.
Regarding the meet. We will run a weight pentathlon(WP) with the first flight at
8AM. If enough interest, we will run a second WP beginning at 9:00. For those unfamiliar, a WP follows this order of events…hammer, shot, discus, javelin, weight throw.
Those not wanting to do a WP will be put in other flights starting at 9.
Flights will be set one week prior to the meet by age, depending on how many of each age group enter. We will also have Superweight at the end as usual.
We are starting a little earlier because we have a party using the building that
Saturday evening, and we sure want to feed you guys some great BBQ. Meal will be served from 2-3
Entry fees are: $10 for first event, $5 thereafter. $30 gets you unlimited
events PLUS BBQ meal included. If not doing unlimited events, BBQ meal is $5.
COUPLES DISCOUNT: Bring a spouse/significant other to throw and BOTH get
unlimited events AND meal for $40 TOTAL.
If you have never thrown or it has been a while, this is the perfect event for
you. Meet is very non-threatening and you’ll pick up some good tips through
observation. However, as a courtesy to our other throwers, we ask that you
remember that they are there to compete and so please don’t ask for direct tips.
Now, regarding the clinic the next day, Sunday the 20th. We have our same group of instructors back. Kevin Harrison for Hammer, Kirsten Schultz for Javelin, Carol Finsrud for Discus, and Marty Davenport for Shot.
Fee structure is same as this summer’s clinic: $60 for all 4 events; $50 for 3
events; $30 for two events; $20 for one event. We’ll start early, 8AM and
target to finish around 2. Depends on the interest.
So, let me know as soon as you can if interested in attending. We really need
about 25 to make it worthwhile for all the instructors. For those that did not
make the June clinic, the reviews we got for the instructors work were extremely
Entry forms for both the meet and the clinic should be ready on the website by
the end of next week: waterlootrackandfield.org.
