Entries posted for masters 200 exhibitions at open nationals
Masters invitational program coordinator Mark Cleary reports that entries are set for the exhibition men’s and women’s 200-meter dashes at the USATF open nationals Feb. 26 in Boston. And as I predicted, the age groups featured are both 40-49. Mark writes: “The fields are posted online on status of entries page for the meet at the USATF website. The lanes are computer generated random draw–that’s how USATF does it–please don’t blame it on me.”
Mark continues:
“The schedule is also on the Website. Yes, I believe that the Linz meet did impact the entries to a certain degree. We had seven entries in the 40-49 Men’s the only group to meet the minimum. We had four 50-59 entries and three 60-69 entries.”
“For Women, we had three 40-49 entries, three 50-59 entries … We had Nadine O’Conner enter and then pull out–she had an injury which I guess has since healed — but she will be going to a meet in Colorado that weekend. So there you have it.”
Here are the lineups:

American indoor records in these events are stiff:
M40-44 22.19 Bill Collins TX (44) Reno, NV 2/26/95
M45-49 22.57 Bill Collins TX (48) 2/14/99
W40-44 25.61 Lesia Batiste LA (41) Boston, MA 3/30/03
W45-49 26.18 Phil Raschker GA (48) Reno, NV 2/26/95
World indoor records are listed as:
M 40 21.94 Enrico Saraceni ITA 40 13.02.05 Genova
M 45 22.57 Bill Collins USA 48 14.02.99
W 40 25.46 Anke Moritz GER 40 20.02.00 Ludvigshafen
W 45 26.06 Phil Raschker USA 47 25.03.94
All the entered athletes are bona fide stars, many with WMA world championship medals, so the fields are respectable. But my original observation still holds: the exhibition program is skewed toward the younger age groups.
Both events are smack dab in the middle of Sunday’s program:
3:44 200m masters women exhibition
3:53 200m masters men exhibition
That’s just before eight consecutive finals. So there’s no question that masters will be showcased. The only question is: When will the older men and women get their moment under the lights?

When the older age groups enter and committ to the race–they had a fair chance but this time it didn’t work out for them–Ken your still trying to make a mountain out of a Mole hill–Mark Cleary
Ken what do you want Mark to do??? The older athletes were given a chance to sign up.. they did not. Perhaps we can get a hollywood make up person to “age” the field that we did get??? Cleary has done the best with those that were interested in participating. I have ALWAYS pushed for “older” athletes BUT if these athletes are not interested my “pushing” is a waste of energy. The fields Mark did set up look great and the races should be exciting…good luck to ALL.. Francis A Schiro
