Douglas J. Smith, president of the Ontario Masters track club, reports that a fellow photog, Steve Burger, has posted his shots of the WMA regional masters meet this past weekend in Guatemala City. Doug also writes: Brian (Keaveney) has the results up on the CMAA site. Doug also reports: “The BC Senior Games were held […]

Phil Raschker writes: “Congratulations to Merlene”

If Phil Raschker had a buck for every record she’s set, she could take quite a few people out to lunch. One she’d love as a dining guest is Merlene Ottey, who is chewing her way through the masters records. Merlene’s latest mark — a W45 best for 200 meters of 23.82 — is nearly […]

IAAF taking WMA’s place as source of masters news?

Well, if it’s Tuesday it’s time to report another W45 world record for Merlene Ottey. This time, the news of her latest age-group astonishment comes via the IAAF. Merlene clocked a 23.82 for 200 meters Sunday at the 4th Athletics Bridge meet in Central Slovakia. The previous W45 record was Ottey’s own 23.97 from mid-June. […]

Wikipedia entry on masters track debated for inclusion

I finally got around to creating a Wikipedia entry for masters track. I labeled it “masters athletics (track and field)” and, like an idiot, began typing away without reading Wikipedia’s rules. Among the edicts: Keep the entry “neutral” in tone and state your references. My first draft started out with a remark about masters’ sense […]

Joy’s team tops all-comers at DecaNations meet

W45 national champ Joy Upshaw-Margerum might not have done much tutoring, but as women’s coach of Etats Unis (Team USA), her 10 lady athletes helped the United States win yesterday’s seven-country DecaNation meet at the Stade Charlety in Paris. USA scored 104.5 points to edge Germany (100). Results are here. American long jumper Tianna Madison […]

Lane, O’Connor win treadmills for top age-graded marks

The essence of masters track? No matter how old you are, you hope to do better next season. Apparently that’s the philosophy of Trent Lane of Louisiana, who at age 96 has accepted shipment of a Champion-brand treadmill for having the highest male age-graded percentage at the Charlotte nationals. Meet director Gordon Edwards writes: “I […]

Sampling of thank-you notes to Charlotte meet director

Despite our reputation for being harsh critics, we masters often show our courteous side. Charlotte nationals meet director Gordon Edwards has shared some notes of praise he received from athletes. Some of these notes also includes minor gripes and questions (Example: “When I was reviewing the results today I noticed that we were 3rd. Was […]

Pete Taylor’s Charlotte odyssey: Long days, short races

I like to say of nationals: “Every athlete has a story.” I wish to amend that — EVERYONE has a story, esepcially our favorite guest commentator, Peter Taylor, who added to his legend as meet announcer at Charlotte by enduring long days, schedule delays and other circumstances. His recollections of the four-day meet (plus a […]

Men’s results from USATF National Masters Weight Pentathlon

Those that govern, throw. So it seems from the results of the Aug. 19 WP nationals at Montana State, where USATF Masters Chair George Mathews and weightmeister Dick Hotchkiss took out their Charlotte frustrations on the shot, jav, hammer, discus and weight throw. Jerry Bookin-Weiner has honcho credentials, too. Another version of these results is […]
