Janvrin wins 17th Drake title — this time in masters 800

Kip Janvrin is a Drake Relays legend as a decathlete. But now that he’s 41, he gets to run for FUN! Today he won the masters 800 in Des Moines in a sensational 1:53.89. He broke the masters meet record by nearly two seconds. Must have been forced to run fast: 18 in the race. “These fans, this facility deserve top-notch performances,” he said. “Did I think I could run that fast? Yeah. We have a beautiful day and the track is fast.” His time age-grades out to 1:47.28. Not too shabby. Tomorrow morning, Drake runs a masters mile. Maybe Kip will come back and surprise us there, too.

Just kidding.
Actually, the lineup for the mile — part of Mark Cleary’s masters invitational program — is quite impressive:

    Janvrin’s 1:53.89 is less than 1.5 seconds off the M40 800m record.

I witnessed Kip’s race first hand and he took it out from the gun and by the beginning of the back stretch he was all alone. I think he can get Gray’s record if he get’s in a race soon with some competition–he had none in that race–he won that same race last year in a very conservative 2:03–he just stayed at the front of the pack for 550 meters and then kicked.
