Jerry Wojcik and Suzy Hess, ex-NMN colleagues, now married
National Masters News arrived a few days ago, and Page 3 provided the biggest scoop of the year: Suzy Hess and Jerry Wojcik, the former publisher and editor of NMN, are married! They got hitched in late March, the weekend of Landover nationals. I’d known for a while they were a couple (they stayed in the same University of Hawaii dorm room during Honolulu nationals in 2005), but this was delightful news. So I wrote them for details, and Suzy graciously satisfied my shameless curiosity. “We decided to marry about two months before the wedding,” she writes. “We got married at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church in Eugene” — the Oregon track town where they live.

Here’s the rest of my quickie Q&A:
Masterstrack.com: How long have you known each other — even before NMN?
Suzy: We met at an Oregon Track Club annual dinner in 1992. We moved
(National Masters News) up to Eugene from L.A. in 1995.
Tell me about the ceremony and any receptions. Who attended? Any track friends?
We wanted a very small traditional ceremony and just Jerry’s son and family and my daughter and family who live in the local area. We had a luncheon with the families and Father Ted and his wife who married us.
Second marriage for both, I assume. Any kids at the wedding?
Yes, second marriage for both of us. We had been divorced and separated for 20+ years. I had my two granddaughters, age 3 and 4, and Jerry had his grandson, age 22.
Do you still live in Eugene? What occupies your time now?
Yes, we still live in Eugene. We got a Cavachon puppy. She is half King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and half Bishon Frise. Jerry named her Lulu. We have a VW Westfalia Camper and meet with a group of Westy campers in different outings. We play petanque with the Eugene Petanque International Club. We also work out as usual with the throwing implements, weather permitting.
What meets do you attend? What are your athletic plans this summer?
We are going to compete in the Oregon Throws Pentathlon and will probably go to the big throws meet in Portland in August.
What’s your advice to older folks who marry again later in life?
Forget all the mistakes you’ve made in the past and enjoy the time you have left and be kind.
We wish Suzy and Jerry all the best in their new adventures together. Here’s how I like to picture them: Jerry throwing and Suzy shooting:
