Brazil picked for 2013 WMA world championships? Doubt it

With no fanfare, World Masters Athletics has announced venues for its 2012 world indoor and 2013 world outdoor championships. Yeah, right. But what’s up with the Eurovets Web site? Its 2012 meet calendarlists Jyväskylä, Finland, as site of WMA worlds, and its 2013 meet calendar lists outdoor worlds for July 24 – August 2 in Porto Alegre, Brazil (which lost to Sacramento for 2011 worlds). WMA’s Web site doesn’t list meets beyond 2011. Of course, these meets are up to voters at the Lahti General Assemblythis summer — not some stooge webmaster at the EVAA. Expect this to be cleared up pretty fast. (Porto Alegre in midwinter should be delightful!)

Here’s how the Eurovets calendar looked on May 5, 2009.

    Ken,
I can’t decide whether you’re being facetious about Porto Alegre in mid-winter or not. I clicked on the link to Port Alegre in your blog and saw that the average temperatures in July there are not too shabby – I believe the average low is about 52 Fahrenheit and high about 66. However, being from New Orleans, just about the same latitude (30) north of the equator that Porto Alegre is south, with similar weather in January here (though a little lower about, 6-8 degrees on both ends), I’m well aware that the average temp is just that, an average, and that it could be significantly cooler than that over the world championship meet week-long or so stretch. Even if the average temp pans out every day, while it might be great for the distance runners, it would be considerably cooler than most sprinters, jumpers and throwers prefer.

I thought the point about Porto Alegre, so far as the decision in 2007 not to award them the 2011 Worlds, was that they didn’t have any appropriate facilities? I thought I’d heard they hoped to be awarded the Championships on the strength of saying they’d build some if they won. Have I got that wrong? Has anything changed, or is this still their position, does anyone know?

I understand that when Porto Alegre made its presentation in Italy (?) they focused on the wonderful sightseeing opportunities and the beaches. Will a WMA meet there include beach volleyball? Will there be surfing contests> How about competitive sandcastle building?
They have lost their patron and booster – so who is going to lead the merry band? Frankly I think this is all a bunch of nonsense.
As for Finland for a WMA Indoor Meet – well I hope there is a WMA indoor meet in 2012- and I suppose Finland is as good a place as any – but in the depth of winter – we certainly will need to be able to fly off to Porte Alegre afterwards to thaw out.
On the other hand – I bet they have a nice indoor track facility.

The Eurovets have tweaked the 2013 page.
Now it lists Porto Alegre, with the additional word: “(planned)”
    Whatever that means.
Guess any fig leaf is better than none.
