Texas Masters Championships features hot sprints, throws
Wayne Bennett, the fastest 72-year-old meet director in the West, shares results from Saturday’s Texas Masters Championships at Coppell High School north of Dallas. Some nice Southwest sprint times noted. Besides Wayne’s own 14.40 and 30.82, I liked M40 John Simpson’s 11.10 and 22.99 and M60 Bill Lewis’ 12.99 — but he was DNF in the deuce. (Hope he’s OK!) Great short hurdle duel between Ken Ellis and Robert Bayless, both 51, with Ken prevailing 15.70 to 15.94. M50 Steve Patridge put the shot 15.77 (51-9), M50 Ken Jansson spun the hammer 53.56 (175-9) and Ed Riewerts beat Steve in the M50 discus, 51.89 to 51.15 (170-3 to 167-9). And M75 Bob Ward was his usual studly self, scoring 5243 points in the throws pentathlon (short of his own listed American record of 5588 and his own listed world record of 5646. Go figure.)

New AR in W60 800 meters by Sabra Harvey: 2:40.56 to erase Carolyn Capetta’s 2:40.91 set in Gateshead, England, in 1999. Great job!
Congrats, Wayne you’ve got to be one of the premier 70 year old sprinters in the world and the age group above has to include Summerlin.
Way to go you guys.
Bill Daprano
the track surface at 6pm was 131 degrees!
my feet were as hot as a burning stump!
Great meet put on once again by Dallas Masters Track Club and it’s affiliates. Special thanks to the officials and volunteers!
131 to 136 has been the usual surface temp at coppell in june and july.Thats hot. June 20th at the Southern Zone meet in Baton Rouge LSU Bernie Moore Stadium the surface temp was 151.Ouch!No breeze and 98 ambeint air (what air?) temp.
John Simpsons feet would smoke on ice.
Seach!
Both meets recently in Coppell I developed blisters on my right foot from the heat/curve. Gonna finally get a chance to run a whole race without slowing down next week! Our luck it’ll be 98-100 degrees there! UGH!
Ha,
Think running on the track was hot!I participated
in the weight pentathlon and we were in the
field from 9am to 7pm;temps at least 100 or maybe
99 degrees.A little shade but I really felt sorry
for our officials;but they did their job till the
end and I did thank each one of them.
The high that day was 103!
You’re a survivor Phyllis!
