Masters indoor exhibition events: men’s 1000, women’s 1500
Mark Cleary, coordinator of the Masters T&F Invitational Program, reports on the exhibition events he’ll organize for the USATF national indoor open championships February 27-28 in Albuquerque, New Mexico: “The indoor events are 1000 meters for men and 1500 meters for women. The outdoor events will be finalized shortly.” He says he’s off to club cross country nationals this weekend in Kentucky and he’ll try to get details on qualifying standards posted to the masters invitational page next week. Last year in Boston, the events were men’s 1500 and women’s 400. In 2008, it was men’s 60 and women’s 400. In 2007: men 800, women 800. In 2006: men 200, women 200. In 2005: men 400, women mile. In 2004, men 1000, women 1000. In 2003, men 3000, women 200. In 2002: men mile, women 400. In 2001: men mile, women mile. And the first year, 2000: men 200, women 200. So I guess we should count on sprints in 2011.

That was the past we have new 800 meter runners.
The qualifying standards must be based on 800 times right? Small chance anyone gets to run the 1000, so the nearest distance is the 800.
I would say 2:02-3 should be the cutoff with 8 spots open.
No one can run with tony in the 1000!!
You don’t think that when the event was picked it was picked for that sole reason of showcasing Tony, no offence to Tony’s talent. Mark has a way of picking events to highlight one high profile distance runner rather than the many that support the sport. It’s interesting that he picked the 1500 for women after picking that same event for outdoors last year. Especially considering that Lisa Valle is one of Mark’s club athletes and she lives in Albuquerque. Talk about a conflict of interest. You get to pick the races for the exhibition and promote your own athletes at the same time.
I take into consideration what events have been run since 2001 at the Open Indoor and Outdoor Champs. They rotate but it does have several facets as far as event selection. The Qualifying will be 2:04 for the 800m or if an athlete has a 2:37 1,000m time from 2009 or 2010 they can also qualify with that. The women will need to have posted a 5:14 time for the 1500 in the 2009 or 2010 season. The Outdoor event will be the 100m for both Men & Women this year.I see where all the folks who are critical of the program are also not putting their names on the blog posts nothing worse than a critical coward–who most likely has done little for the sport.I spend the majority of my time doing the very best for our sport that I can- that’s all I have to say.
