Greatest masters vaulter in history set for Reno PV Summit

Wolfgang Ritte

Germany’s Wolfgang Ritte, the Sergey Bubka of masters track and the 2008 World Masters Athlete of the Year, is coming to America. He’s reportedly set to compete next month in the world-famous National Pole Vault Summit, an indoor event in Reno, Nevada. Wolfie, with his vaulting wife, Ute, apparently are having their travel expenses comped by sporting goods company UCS / Spirit and its German representative, Heinz Peters. How good is Wolfie? In June 2008, he jumped 4.60 meters (15-1) at a time no other M55 had even cleared 14 feet. The Koops of Germany say Wolfie was set to visit Reno in 2007 when he turned 55, but the summit was moved up, before he changed age groups. So he didn’t show. His only potential challengers in late January would be M55 indoor American record-holder Jeff Kingstad or M50 world record holder Gary Hunter. Bring him on!

Here’s a rough Google translation of the Koops’ report:

Wolfgang and Ute Ritte from start to Reno (USA) – Good start to the season in Paderborn

STILL no M55 has ever made 14′. That said, Gary Hunter has broken all of his records when he became of age so expect a 4.60m+ when Gary turns 55 early in 2011. Bubba

Bubba, with all due respect, but you need to stand corrected. Wolfgang Ritte holds the outdoor M55 world record at 4,60m (15 ft. 1 in.), and he holds the indoor M55 world record at 4,40m (14 ft. 5 in.)

    Hello Wolfgang and Ute,
It is exciting to learn that you will be attending the PV Summit this year. I look forward to seeing you both and visiting with you again. I’m glad to hear you are both jumping well.
I’m also impressed and envious that you are getting “help” with your travel expenses!
    See you soon.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear – he is the only M55 to ever make 14′ or higher. The #2 indoor or outdoor not named Ritte is Kingstad’s indoor AR at 4.21m (13′ 10 1/2″).

Bubba, ok. But I need to correct my math. 4,60m is 15’4″ and 4,40m is 14’8″. Sorry for the typo.

  6. Bubba Sparks - December 31, 2009

    To correct – 4.60m is 15′ 1″ and 4.40m is 14′ 5 1/4″. I used to coach elite girls so I’m pretty positive of these. HeeHee! Have a great New Year! BTW – 4.30m is 14′ 1 1/4″ and 4.27m is 14′. Bubba

BTW – I agree with Ken, Wolfie is the best ever. In fact I’m the one who called him the “Bubka” of masters vaulting. Can’t wait to meet him and see him jump. I’ve seen some good YouTube stuff but the real thing in Reno will be awesome!

Sweet spreadshhet John…contemplating Reno, need a roomate?

The ‘official’ conversions only gives the height for a ranking in the imperial system.
For the reverse problem the conversions are not good: which imperial measured height do you have to jump to let it count as a certain metric height?
John’s spreadsheet gives sometimes the first and sometimes the second possibility. In the case of 4.60: when you jump a metric 4.60 it counts as 15′ 1″ imperial, but when you jump an imperial measured 15′ 1″ it counts as a metric 4.59. Always round down…
I had a spreadsheet for conversion for the high jump on the high jump yahoogroup, but that group has passed away…

  12. Bubba Sparks - January 2, 2010

We ONLY request metric heights near the end of a competition so there is never any confusion. Today I cleared 3.99m and attempted an American Record of 4.14m for M55. Not Wolfie but not bad for an American. The point is I requested the metric heights, not the English. Bubba

  13. John Altendorf - January 2, 2010

Weia, the “official” link I posted is for Americans when they apply for a record. As such, any Imperial measurement is rounded DOWN to the nearest cm. (Their ‘computer’ also rounds down when going from metric to Imperial.)
As noted on the top left of my chart, it takes metric and rounds to the NEAREST 1/4 inch. As such, it sometimes rounds UP and sometimes DOWN. Except for qualifying for a record, my chart works well, at least for me. :-)

For my statistic site with absolute age records I several times hitted on official results being non-metric and converted metric rankings being wrong. Why don’t you Americans simply ask all meet organisers to do the measurements metric? Problem solved…
