Will Bernard Lagat’s mark at Albuquerque count as M35 record?
Chad Newton, kiss your record goodbye. Chad is the listed M35 American record-holder in the indoor 3000. He ran 8:42.00 at the 2008 Boston masters nationals. But by 8:30 p.m. Eastern time Saturday, Bernard Lagat will hold the record. That’s when he runs the 3K at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque. Bernard turned 35 in December and has run a 3:56.34 mile this season. Last year, Bernard ran the 3K in 7:35.41 (top time in the nation and No. 5 in the world). So if he doesn’t get hit by a truck, the record is his. The listed M35 world record is 7:40.68 by Germany’s Dieter Baumann in 2002. Theoretically, any record set at a U.S. national championship counts for a masters record. But too many times we’ve seen incredible marks from the Trials and Olympics not make it into the record books. So stay tuned.
Bernard isn’t the only 35-plus elite entrant at Albuquerque. In fact, the oldest might be 3K race-walker Teresa Vaill, who turned 47 last November. And fellow walker Tim Seaman turns 38 in May. Also entered is 42-year-old Pat Manson, seeking another 18-footer in his storied career. And 37-year-old Derek Miles is a favorite to make the U.S. vault team for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Also: As of this morning, only three men were listed as entered in the masters 1,000-meter exhibition at nationals. Any local runners want to get in the act?
