Allen Johnson clocks 13.65 season best at 39 in Shanghai meet

Allen Johnson took fifth in a Diamond League 110 hurdles today in Shanghai — a season best 13.65. (See results here.) Masters hurdlers in his same age group run 39-inch hurdles. He did this over 42-inchers on a chilly night and into a slight wind! He’s bearing down on 40, remember. He now stands in the USA top 25 on the 2010 open list.

But will he compete in the M35 hurdles at Sacramento? Regular entry closes in 33 days (June 25).

Allen is the greatest hurdler of all time, IMHO. I’m sure he probably has some real(money paying) meets he can run at, don’t expect to see him in Sacramento. Maybe next year after he turns 40! How many all-time greats have ever actually run masters track when they were as good as he still is? That would be great to see!

Agree completely, Rod. But I know that you will be there. I expect to be there as well, but not as a hurdler. (One time in a small college meet I ran the high and low hurdles, 880, and mile purely to earn points. What a mess I was.) Now that I think of it, maybe it was just a dream that I ran the lows. I know I ran the highs, 5-stepping all the way.

i agree with rod…and i am pleasantly surprised to hear of my favorite track and field ( and most knowledgeable ) announcer’s membership in the brotherhood of hurdlers…another reason why i continue love this sport…
