Callahan’s new query: How can you tell injury apart from pain?
Sean Callahan, my GeezerJock friend freelancing for major Chicago media, has a new question for y’all: “I’m working on another story. This one is about how to tell if you’re genuinely injured or just in standard pain from your workout/training. I’m wondering if any of your readers have a story about what they thought was just pain but was actually an injury or vice versa.” Now don’t answer all at once. His computer hard drive is finite. Write him directly or post a comment here. Our earlier post about competing in pain at Sacramento nationals triggered a flood of responses.

Having been through 2 joint surgeries and comparing to having muscle soreness numerous times my personal anecdote is this: If the pain is sharp and fluctuates with movement it is likely an injury. If the pain is a fairly consistent ache it is likely overuse soreness. If ANY pain persists after a couple of days of rest/icing/anti-inflammatories then seek a medical opinion. The main thing is if you are hurting enough to question the difference be cautious!
Fell while “jogging” last week (Sept.) on a concrete sidewalk. Dislocated finger (messed-up tendons and a crack) in one hand, and broke finger in other hand . . . cast for both hands the next two months. Amazing I have felt no pain, and have taken no pain medicine. Both hands (and several fingers) are swollen but have felt no pain.
I originally thought the second hand was sprained, but xray revealed the break.
First time in my life that I have ever broken a bone.
January 2010 started with knee surgery.
Can’t wait to be healthy and hurdling next season.
Need to rest my hands/fingers and go ice now !
