Charles Allie WR, AR add to his legend at National Senior Games

Charles Allie is a modest gent who never toots his horn. But the M65 sprint giant has plenty of friends eager to do this. I’ve been informed — five days into the National Senior Games in Berea, Ohio — that Charles has posted jaw-dropping times in the 100, 200 and 400. (Complete results are here.) […]

Olympian Hari Chandra quits as WMA Asia rep after decades

Hari Chandra of Singapore, one of the founders of Asian masters track and a 1956 Olympian for Malaysia, has resigned as Asia rep on the WMA Council. “Health problems together with a desire to spend more time with his family motivated his decision and he will be missed,” reported WMA. “The president of the Asian […]

Brazil worlds website is up again after maintenance shutdown

Sometime today, the website of the Porto Alegre world masters championships was restored to life after being shut for maintenance. Several people called my attention to the link being dead, with a note about “account suspended.” That didn’t look good, so I wrote some WMA friends. I won’t take credit for site being up, but […]

Hugs all around at Olathe masters nationals athletes banquet

Winners of the 2012 USATF masters track awards were announced last December at the annual meeting in Daytona Beach, Florida. But the snazzy little plaques weren’t awarded until the Olathe nationals athletes banquet July 13. Check out this photo gallery of the evening. Besides Athletes of the Year Bob Lida and Jeanne Daprano, you’ll see […]

Bard Barton lowers own steeple AR, falls short of world record

Two months ago, Brad Barton of Ogden, Utah, broke a 37-year-old American record in the M45 steeple. Saturday in Seattle, he shot for the world record but fell 1.5 seconds short. In the process, however, he became the fastest steepler over 40 in U.S. history (by bettering the listed M40 record). Kathy Martin and Nadine O’Connor […]

William Bell Sr. is USATF Athlete of the Week for M90 vault WR

Earl Bell’s dad vaulted 2.05 meters (6-08 3/4) and endeared himself to USATF folks. So William Bell was named USATF Athlete of the Week. At 91, he’s definitely a phenom. “Bell will compete in his current age-group for the next three years before he plans to attempt the world record in the 95-99 age group,” […]

Kathy Martin mauls W60 world record in mile with stunning 5:42

Hall of Famer Kathy Martin, 61, has won so many honors she almost ceases to surprise. She took the 10K at Olathe nationals in an American record 41:10.57 — 33 seconds better than the listed W60 best. No sweat. But that was but a warmup for her latest shocker. At Valley Stream North High School […]

Sloping field may nullify three world records set at Olathe

At least three world records, and one American record, may be nullified as a result of a sloping field at Olathe masters nationals, I learned today. Hearing that rumors were circulating about “lack of certified field event areas,” I wrote to several masters enchiladas. Gary Snyder, the top man, replied: “I do not have the […]

Relay records, Peyton-Collins duel highlight final day at Olathe

With temps in the 80s (at last) but headwinds still a nuisance, the Olathe masters nationals wrapped up Sunday with four world records in the relays and an amazing M60 American record for Oscar Peyton in the 200 — beating Bill Collins and a 10 mph wind. I got shots of all these in the […]

No medal stand (or water handouts) at Olathe nationals

USATF and USADA rules govern masters nationals. Local organizers have a say as well. Examples of both were evident Saturday on Day 3 at Olathe. With temps rising into the 90s and high humidity, I made a ruckus about the lack of a table near the finish line with water jugs and filled cups ready […]
