46-year-old Italian gets 4-year doping ban after half-marathon

Triathlete Giuseppe must have had similar expression after hearing of ban.

According to the latest IAAF newsletter, the Italian runner Giuseppe Baldelli got busted for doping and was slapped with a four-year suspension. This report, translated from Italian, said: “Giuseppe Baldelli, triathlete affiliated Fidal, according to the company Avis Perugia, was disqualified from the CONI Anti-Doping Tribunal for 4 years for use of performance-enhancing drugs. Baldelli had tested positive for NESP, the Darbopoietina, the evolution of EPO during an examination arranged by the April 6, 2014, at the Half Marathon Corciano. The prosecutor had asked for 4 years of doping stop, request received in full then. Baldelli will return to the races in 2018.” He wasn’t the only over-35er nailed. So were “Søren Hammer (DOB 13.11.71) DEN Out-of-competition test, DEN 26.03.14 2 years ineligibility 14.04.14-13.04.16″ and “Aziz Makhrout (DOB 01.01.78) MAR IAAF Rule 32.2 (c) – Refusal to submit to an in competition doping control, ‘Mezza Maratona Corcianese’, Corciano, ITA 08.04.14 2 years ineligibility 08.06.14-07.06.16.” Meanwwhile, kiddos, the IAAF has added to the banned substances list. So be careful out there.

That reminds me. How much are we masters tested? For instance, were there any doping tests taken at the recent Evacs European Championships at Izmir, Turkey?

I dont know about Izmir but both in Lahti (2009)and Gent (2011)I was tested, negative.

There is a lot of testing for masters. In 2012, I was tested twice, in March and in August, both negative. Also in Budapest one of the Canadian athletes was tested, negative of course.

The only masters drug-testing done in America is at masters indoor and outdoor nationals. The Eurovets championship meets do testing as well. The Germans probably test. too.

The Dutch (rarely) also. I have only once been tested, Gateshead 1999.

I got tested for the first time in March 2014 at the Midwest Indoor Regional in Kenosha, WI. Of course it was negative. So it’s not just at National meets.

  7. Ken Stone - October 2, 2014

That’s a revelation, Myrle. Was the Kenosha meet for open or masters-only? I hadn’t heard of a masters-only meet in America doing drug-testing out of nationals the past two or three years.

The crazy thing is they are really not testing on the Masters LDR side and that’s where all the purse ( prize) money is. At least on the Track & Field side we are testing. I wish LDR would start testing at any championship where they are giving money. There are athletes that used to do our National meets- now they only run the road races with money and they run ridiculously fast- gee what do you suppose is wrong with that picture. LDR should invest a little bit of that money into drug testing and I would bet my house you would see those same people that left the track seen leave the National road Championship seen as well- then they could rival in beating the crap out of all the weed warriors that show up at the local 5 & 10k’s

    weekend warriors

Sampling is not testing. Testing is expensive, but sampling is not. Most of the “testing” people report may be sampling that is never tested.

  11. Myrle Mensey - October 3, 2014

Ken, It was the full drug test not a sampling. Also it was a master’s only meet. I know there was one other female tested.

On 2 October I mailed European Masters President Kurt Kaschke on the subject:

    ‘Hello again,
Thank you and all your colleagues for your work at Izmir. Highly appreciated.
I have since wondered whether or not there were any doping tests at Izmir. I posted something to that effect on http://masterstrack.com/. Could you or someone else state how many doping tests were taken at Izmir? The question should not go unanswered.
    Best wishes,
    Anthony Treacher’

    Kurt Kaschke replied 5 October:

    ‘Dear Anthony,
just a simple “NO” … there is only one thing that is known by all athletes: 1 per 200 athletes following the contract but we always have more tests.
    Best regards
    Kurt’

That was in some ways interesting. But I would have liked a more definitive answer because I do not believe any doping tests were taken at the Izmir 2014 European Championships.
