Update on German claims of mass masters doping

Stefan Waltermann to the rescue. German-born and American-naturalized, Stefan has provided a summary of the German masters doping accusations. Stefan writes: “Dr. Clemens Prokop is the president of the German Track & Field Association, or DLV. The German Parliament, or Bundestag, has a sport committee overseeing and/or tracking developments in all sports in Germany. On January 31, 2007, Dr. Prokop stated in front of the Sportausschuss or sport committee that the current system of doping control should be placed under more scrutiny.”

Stefan continues:

He mentioned that his own organization, the DLV is not controlling athletes for blood doping and talked about the low frequency of tests in general. He continued by stating that six out of eight doping controls of older athletes (“seniors” = masters) resulted in positive findings, the dudes and ladies were doped and got canned for two years.
Next, very well respected newspapers in the German speaking countries including the Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the Basler Zeitung reported that 80% of the masters in German track & field are doped. The DLV has 900,000 members, 45% or 405,000 are masters.
The papers concluded that 324,000 must be doped. Prokop did not differenciate between road and track & field, of course not. If you find this laughable, the German masters scene does not. Last week, Dr. Prokop issued a clarification in form of a press release.
“In masters athletics we don’t find any controls in the training environment, only during competition. Not 80% of all controls are positive, but 80% of all positive (doped) results in competition are coming from masters. Due to the low number of athletes controlled (about six during a typical competition), you cannot draw conclusion.”
Well, today the original statement was aired by a German TV station as part of the live stream of parliamentary shenanigans in Germany. Following the show, the German ProMasters organization, representing a few hundred of the top level German masters athletes, repeated exactly what Ken already placed on his website, nothing more, nothing less.
The dear top masters in Germany are still outraged at the original statement and at the ‘half-assed’ correction. They clearly state the obvious, the overwhelming majority of German masters are clean and fight for a fair, drug free, and equitable competition. If you don’t believe this story, just watch the live stream at Phönix under Livestream der vom Parlamentsfernsehen aufgezeichneten Sitzung, all stinking 3 hours and 38 minutes of it.
Thus, you can answer the question of what was said and how it was said for yourself. Show some patience, please, the statement is definitively there. In a related story, the DLV announced a much closer cooperation with EVAA (European Veterans Athletic Association) in the field of masters doping.
Now, that is a dramatic change as well. For the better, everybody is hoping. Here is a breakdown on the 80%, I found on the related website: Each German masters championship, six folks get tested. At the German Multi Events 2004, three dudes tested positive, called the Super-Gau in German, the worst case scenario in a atomic power plant failure, two at the German Masters (Liedke, Prochnau, Muschinski, Voigt and Schallau are named). 12 events x 6 tests each = 72 tests, 5 positive!
Dr. Prokop the great mathematician said that got to be 80%. Adam Riese, the great grandfather of all mathematicians could correct this: 6.94% have been positive. Personally, I feel this are 6.9% too many, may they live in shame.
