Allen Woodard, 46, claims WR for 400 — oldest sub-50 one-lapper

Allen Woodard, a recent national indoor champion at 200, became the oldest man to go sub-50 for 400 meters after clocking a magnificent 49.69 Saturday at the 33rd Annual Victor Lopez Classic at Rice University in Houston. Allen is 46. He beat the listed M45 world record of 50.18 by American Khalid Mulazim at 2011 Berea nationals. In 2010, Douglas Kalembo said he was 50 when he ran 49.85, but USATF wouldn’t accept his age docs and refused to ratify the mark. But Allen certainly had the speed for a sub-50, with his recent 200 clocking of 22.92, about four-tenths off a Bill Collins WR. Nice lap, Mr. Woodard! Here’s Allen winning the 4 at Olathe nationals in 2013.

Posted results from Rice. The X by Allen’s name indicates he’s not a scoring collegian.

    Respect! Fantastic run

Hope he goes to France for Worlds. Will be a great match up up with Darren Scott of GB and others.

I just looked at Allen’s 200 trial at Winston-Salem last month, in which he cruised to the 23.42 mentioned above. I also watched his final, in which he defeated the highly regarded Lee Bridges while running 22.92.

He really looked like a college sprinter in both races, and I certainly believe that he could go under 49.50 outdoors in the 400 given perfect conditions.

Next up will be the long, sometimes difficult, process of record ratification. I’ll write down “Allen Woodard 49.69” in my file and will post something on masterstrack.com in December if the mark is not accepted.

I also note a sub-50 indoor 400 by Fred Sowerby:

I’m checking on Allen’s DOB to see if he’s the oldest.

    super…!!

  6. Ben Ami - April 5, 2015

i dare to think that Darren Scott could run under 49.

  7. Nate Sickerson - April 6, 2015

    Great Run Allen!

  8. Matt B. - April 6, 2015

    Ben
Maybe but I doubt it. He ran a 48.57i in 1998 and the last time under 50 was in 2011 with a 49.81 and 21.82 speed that year. I’d say he may be able to just break 50 this year too if he concentrates on the 400. Sub 49 is a whole other level.

  9. Ken Stone - April 7, 2015

Finally got around to doing the math.

Allen is about a year older than Fred at time of sub-50:

Allen born in January 1969, and date of 400 was April 4, 2015

Fred Sowerby born Dec. 11, 1948 , and date of 400 was Jan. 29, 1994
