Anselm LeBourne, 55, pops mind-blowing 4:34.79 mile at Armory

At the start of the season, the listed M55 indoor world record in the mile was Nolan Shaheed’s 4:42.89 from 2006. Tuesday night at the Armory track in Manhattan, Anselm LeBourne lowered his own mile WR to 4:34.79 — worth 3:50.7 on the Age-Graded Tables. (See results and splits here.) The Hall of Famer, in taking seventh in section 2, thus got his FIFTH world indoor record of the season. His earlier mile best of 2015 was 4:37.05. Tuesday’s meet, called NYRR Night at the Races, is USATF-sanctioned, according to the meet site. They posted dozens of photos as well (including the one here by Karthik Adimula). Nice run, Anselm. Simply amazing! Any ideas for new nickname?

Anselm indicates he's at peace with his second M55 indoor mile world record.

Anselm also joins a handful of other legends in clocking a faster mile WR indoors than outdoors.

His 4:34.79 nips the listed M55 outdoor WR of 4:35.04 by Australia’s
Keith Bateman in 2010. Anselm follows Eamonn Coghlan, Bernard Lagat, Nolan Shaheed and Orville Rogers in accomplishing the all-time mile best indoors” feat.

Keith was among dozens congratulating Anselm on FB: “Well done! That does indeed beat the outdoor 4:35 – excellent running my friend”

Meanwhile, M45 record-holder John Trautmann had another go in Section 1.

He posted this note on Facebook:

Well, I had another interesting trip to the Armory last night for NYRR Night at the Races. My plan was to try to break 4:10 for the mile and had brought a rabbit with me to ensure that I kept on the correct pace.

The meet director had even put a camera at the 1500m mark so I could get an official 1500m clocking as well. Unfortunatley things seldom go as planned. I started on the outside alley and had to break after the first turn. As I broke the back of my shoe was clipped and I ended up losing my left shoe.

I actually toyed with the idea of running the rest of the race with 1 shoe on and 1 off and had visions of Dejen Gebremeskel beating Mo Farrah in the 2011 New Balance grand prix. I came to my senses 1 lap later and pulled out of the race.

I think this may be a sign (along with today’s 60 degree weather) that indoors is over and its time to move on to the outdoor season!

    Kudos to Mr. LeBourne,
No one runs times like that ….without smart and seriously hard training……
Lots of respect from a 400 meter runner,

Outstanding. Eamonn Coghlan already owns Chairman of the Boards. Most indoor tracks are now Mondo anyway, so Anselm could be Presidente de Mundo Mondo. As a fellow 55-59 I have tremendous respect for his performances this indoor season.

It is truly fun to watch Anselm run. I don’t see any reason he won’t continue setting the current AG records but also really lower the 60-64 AG records. Really inspiring!
