Bait-and-switch isn’t limited to USATF Masters

Y’all know about how the New York Armory said yes and then no the 2007 USATF Masters Indoor Nationals and how the Home Depot Center near L.A. pulled the same stunt on the 2006 USATF Western Regional Masters Championships. Now comes word that Azusa Pacific University has pulled the rug from under the USATF National Club Championships as well. Steve Vaitones of USATF New England posted this note on the Yahoo Groups USATF Associations listserve: “From the Elite Development Club listserver, the site for the Club National TF meet has been moved from Azusa Pacific to Mt SAC.”

Here’s the rest of Steve’s note, quoting a memo from Skip Stolley of the USATF Southern California Association:
To: ELITE DEVELOPMENT CLUB REPRESENTATIVES
From: Skip Stolley, Meet Director
Subj: 2006 USATF NATIONAL CLUB T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS UPDATE
Recently, we lost Azusa Pacific University as the site for our 2006 USATF National Club Track & Field Championships. It turns out they are having a new track installed this summer and their coach has known about it since last December. He and I had executed a written agreement last September and only a rumor I heard tipped me off. I still have no idea why he never informed me.
Regardless, after some world-class scrambling we have secured Mt. San Antonio College — home of the world-renown Mt. SAC Relays — as the new site for our Championships. Mt. SAC is a world-class track & field facility in every respect and having our Championships there should add to the meet’s growing stature. Many of our participants are likely to have competed in the Relays and be familiar with the logistics of the facility and local hotels and eateries.
One of the main attractions of Azusa Pacific was an outstanding room & board package that was available in their air-conditioned dorms. But we may even have done that one better at the Kellog West Center at Cal Poly Pomona, just 0.75M down Temple Avenue from Mt. SAC. This is an on-campus hotel, not a dorm, and they are making single/double rooms available to participants in our Championships for $60 night single/double, $70 for triple quad and that rate includes a free buffet breakfast and shuttle service to and from Ontario Airport.
We also have an outstanding $79 rate at the Shilo Inn, just 3M from Mt. SAC. That rate also includes breakfast and shuttle service to the Mt. SAC track. Meet Information for the 2006 USATF National Club Track & Field Championships is now posted on the USATF website at _www.usatf.org_(http://www.usatf.org/) , and on our Southern California website at www.scausatf.org_http://www.scausatf.org/) , sometime this week.
More updates will follow.

Ken, the Home Depot Center also did not hold a meet date for a Youth meet this summer as well–so we were hit at every level this year by somebody. Facilities have become a problem for all levels of our sport. It just makes putting on meets that much more difficult and stressful. I am feeling much better now that Long Beach State is official–I go there tomorrow discuss details and sign the contract. Mark
