Aussie Bateman scorches Burns’ WR in M55 mile, clocks 4:35.04

Keith Bateman seeks six WRs this season.

Who said it was indoor season? Not Keith Bateman. The Aussie superstar yesterday ran a mile outdoors in 4:35.04, taking nearly 2 seconds off Rich Burns’ 6-month-old M55 world record of 4:36.94. Rich had lowered a record that had lasted 33 years. Now this. No word short of awesome suffices. From Down Under, Simon Butler-White writes: “Happy to report that Keith Bateman broke the 1 mile record at the Athletics New South Wales ‘Skins’ meet at Sydney Olympic Park yesterday (December 18). …The official results from the meet are posted on the Athletics NSW website, nswathletics.org.au.” On the Age-Graded Tables, 4:35 is worth an open time of 3:50.9. That’s nonsense. Call it 3:45.

Here’s a great interview from June 2010.

Check out Keith’s coaching website as well.

And here are results for Keith’s latest record for the ages:

Ken, don’t forget it is midsummer in Oz. Well done again, Keith.

Summer? As in warm weather? Hey, that’s cheating!

  3. Matt B. - December 19, 2010

Is 4:12 possible 1500. Closer to a 4:31 mile I think but he is closing in. Keep it up Bateman.

Thanks all (and to Rich Burns for some lovely emails) – I have 2 1500m races next month and am hoping to better my 4:12.9 last month – am just hoping for good weather and a good field and a ‘feel good’ day – Saturday’s temperature for the mile was about 29C (85F ?) but the wind was 20 – 25 KPH – in January it is likely to be hotter – I am fairly used to that now but the wind not welcome.
