Bernard Lagat easily takes down M35 American 3K record

Bernard Lagat a couple minutes ago destroyed Chad Newton’s listed M35 American record-holder in the indoor 3000 at Albuquerque nationals. Official time not yet posted. But Bernard ran 8:12 — 30 seconds faster than Chad’s 8:42 two years ago at Boston indoor nationals. Bernard fell short of  the listed WR of 7:40.68 by Germany’s Dieter Baumann in 2002. But tonight’s race was at altitude.

Here’s the USATF blog account of the race:

    USATF quoted Bernard Lagat thusly:

“I didn’t know how I was going to feel with the altitude. I actually didn’t feel anything after about five laps. I just wanted to have fun. I was running on the inside. I wanted to be able to keep an eye on who was going to make a move. I just wanted to win and make the team. I wanted to maintain the lead. I wanted to make sure I was going to be number one. I wanted to win and make the team. That is what I came here for.”

Congratulations to Bernard. Ken, just a follow-up to an earlier post about the 3:56.34 mile that Bernard ran in the Millrose Games in January (crushed the American indoor M35 record). The updated list of American indoor records has Nolan Shaheed’s mark (4:57.06)from Hartshorne Mile on January 23 of this year as pending (M60), and it also has Monica Joyce’s 5:08.65 run on January 29 as the pending American record for W50.

Bernard Lagat’s time is not shown, however. That means it will probably be lost to history. Oh, well.
