Berry Berry good race for M40 team at Penn

It wasn’t a record, but the winning M40 4×4 team at Penn came scary close. The all-time best M40 4×4 is the venerable 3:25.40 by the Philadelphia Masters (Dhamiri Abayomi, Robert Stanford, Jim Burnett and Edwin Roberts) way back in 1983. (April 30 correction: Actually, the record is 3:20.83 by Sal Allah, Kevin Morning, Ed Gonera, Ray Blackwell in 2001. My apologies) This year’s winner — a bicoastal team made up of Kettrell Berry, McDuffie Allen, Cornell Stephenson and Sal Allah — clocked 3:26.80, an average of 51.7 per leg. The leadoff leg was San Diegan Berry, the M40 champ at 400 at last year’s Hawaii masters nationals.

Excuse me, but the best all-time Masters 4×400 and World Record is by my Sprint Force America Club in 2001 at the Penn Relays, which is an incredible 3:20.83! That relay team consisted of me, Kevin Morning, Ed Gonera & Dr. Ray Blackwell.
The world record before that was 3:21 and change, and stood since, I believe 85′, by an all-star team at one of our World Championships.
Today’s race really shows that it’s hard to get 4 guys whose at there best then to put it down on the track. That race in 01′ was simply awesome, and was a great day for Masters track.
Today’s races were again a testament of how the master’s athlete has evolved and is now well respected. I thank my teammates for not losing confidence in the race considering where our position was…..that’s why it’s a team effort!!

I agree Sal and his buddies ran the time he listed. I ran on another team against them and remember they blew away the field.

I would like to thank all the Masters that participated this weekend at Penn. It is always a pleasure to see you guys. I hope to see you all at the Outdoor Nationals.
Mr.William Collins, you inspire us all and I will leave it at that.
I take my hat off to Chris, Courtney, Tim, Rawle in the 4×100. Great job as well as all the other teams. Don and Aaron get healthy my brothers.
To all the 4×400 Teams that ran today, thanks.
I would like to especially thank my friends McDuffrie, Cornell, and Sal for pulling it together after I let you guys down. I got my @#$% kicked, no excuses.
    Thanks Fellas

    Ketrell,
I’ve known you since 94′ and you admirably christened me in the 400m final at my very first Masters Nationals in Eugene. You, Cornell and I finished 1,2,3, all under 50.0.
My point is this: You have been a champion since in all you have done in your events,( 100,200,400 ) and continue to shine everytime you step on the track. Shit, you got nothin’ to prove! You were simply not at your best yesterday. And that’s that!!!
You and Cornell I’ve admired for so long man, mainly because you really love this sport as I do. Thanks again for being part of this, and hope one day we can do it again.
I thank all the other teams for representing, and pushing me where I needed to go in the race. We’ll do it again, I’m sure.
    Sal

This blog brings to light how record keeping for masters is an absolute disgrace. In an age of easy access to information, USATF Masters has either not put the purchase of a computer in their budget or forgot to turn it on.
I spoke at length to Peter Taylor and Phil Felton on Friday morning about the faulty record keeping. Later that afternoon the Masters M50 4 x400 relay winners are announced as setting a new club record ( 3:41.66) NOT TRUE —– the record was established in 2002 at the USATF masters outdoor nationals(3:37.20) set at a national championship not at a local meet. Their own championships mind you. Saturday morning I again spoke to Pete and Phil and brought the discepency to their attention. I knew Pete writes an article for MNN on Penn.
The 3:20.83 M40 4×400 WR is not listed on the USATF website but can be found on the WMA site. Strange and inexcusable.
PS Ken—– SFA also ran 3:25.09 at Penn in 2003

Congratulations to ALL the Masters athletes who ran at the Penn Relays….followed by a BIG thank you to Phil Felton who continues to provide US with an incredible opportunity…THANKS AGAIN PHIL!!!!! In regard to Kens “mistake” with the 4 x 400 record dont take it hard Ken the record keeping for we Masters is a disgrace and a shame.Clearly little or NO effort is put into this and who pays???? strangely enough the DUES PAYING athlete like myself….i pay my memebership fee to USATF and i do not get ADEQUATE or FAIR record keeping. This is why mistakes are CONSTANTLY made in regard to “records”. We have a system that is incredily flawed BUT they actually gat away with this!!!! Shame on us…we accept this??? An athlete gives his/her heart and soul in a battle against the merciless clock/tape measure..and when a miracle happens and a record is actually established we are denied this??? Someone please tell me how this is possible??? THIS IS A DISGRACE….i have SEVERAL examples of this but would love to hear from other athletes with more record “horror stories”…..July 2003 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Puerto Rico…Mens 50 – 54 4×100 relay….Bob Bowen/Ed Gonera/Jesse Norman/Bill Collins…run 44.99 and WIN..they HAVE NOT YET BEEN GIVEN RECOGNITION for this WORLD record SET in a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP???? WHY?? This is an international situation granted…but where is our federation??? Who knows…. but when you look at all the flaws in our system how much could they help anyway???!!!Ed and myself cannot even get responses to emails sent in regard to this….This is a disgrace….this is part of the overall “problem”. We ALL deserve better than this..In what other sport is the responsibility put on the athlete to “prove” they established a record??? How did this system come to pass??? The athlete has a specific role and the meet organisers have a specific role…why were organisational responsibilities ie: record establishing paperwork put on athletes.???.and MANY times in the middle of competitions?? How stupid is that????

“STUPID IS” “IS STUPID DOES”to take a quote from Forrest Gump. I agree entirely with Francis when it comes to keeping records it should be soley the responsibilty of the USATF organization.
The record committe is there for a reason and if they are not going to do the correct thing by putting records where they belong then why have them at all ! Furthermore these records that go unrecorded should be looked into by the committe and be established so the athletes who ran these races get the recognition they truely deserve.
Also like Ed said if it is a World Record then why is it not put in the USATF’S website! How is it that some records are in and some are out ? Dont make any sense to me or any one else for that matter.
So when the rulings are being proposed someone with good peace of mind should recommend that “ALL” records that are set regardless of who set them be established in the “MASTERS RECORD BOOKS” These athletes worked hard to produce a time that they may never be able to equal again!! Last time looked nobody is getting any younger which makes it so much harder to do again . If any one on the record committe disagrees with me let me know .
