Two masters vaulters are going to the Beijing Olympics

Well, don't look for M40 Jeff Hartwig or M35 Derek Miles at Spokane this summer. On August 8, the second day of USATF masters nationals, Jeff and Derek will be marching in the Opening Ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics! Derek and Jeff went 1-2 at the Eugene Olympic Trials as Jeff raised his M40 world record to 5.70 meters (18-81/4) and Derek won at 5.80 (19-0 1/4). Jeff returns to the Games for the first time since 1996. At the press interview tent, as Jeff was getting seated, Atlanta Olympian and world long jump record holder Mike Powell leaped onto the raised platform and gave Jeff a big hug. Earlier, Jeff was reminded that four years ago he said there was "not a chance" he would compete in the 2008 Trials. He spent 5 minutes explaining how things changed. I'll detail that chat later. Time to decompress after a 9.68 day. Becca Gillespy's audio interview with Jeff is right here. Her Derek Miles interview is here.

Gary Snyder running for re-election as masters chair

In an email note about the USOC-imposed restructuring of USATF, Masters T&F Chairman Gary Snyder explains his absence from USATF board meeting that decided to expel masters from the board (Gary had scheduled vacation with potential loss if travel canceled). Gary also says he's decided to run for a full term as chairman this winter at the annual meeting in Reno. (His current term is for two years, finishing George Mathews' stint after he resigned in 2006.) "Speaking of the future," Gary writes, "many of you have asked me if I intend to run for reelection and my answer is yes. I view restructure as a significant opportunity for positive change and intend to provide the leadership."

Here is Gary's note to his committee:

United States Olympic Committee USOC Mandated Restructure

Hi Everybody,

By now we have all read the AP Press release from USATF regarding restructure which has generated speculation how it will effect Masters Track and Field. The current USOC mandate dates to 2006 before my term on the USATF Board of Directors began (Dec 2007). In addition to the annual meeting the BOD meets in person in June and October. The BOD voted to suspend restructure activity until after the December 2008 elections during the June 2007 meeting. An exchange of testy letters with USOC resulted in the latest mandate to submit a restructure plan by end of month or face punitive action.

The June BOD meeting was originally scheduled for June 7 & 8 and changed by BOD vote to June 21 & 22. Unfortunately I had previously scheduled my vacation for that period and could not change my plans without penalty. During our June 18 MTF Executive Committee conference call we discussed sending a replacement but I explained that without the background information it would be a waste of time and money.

I cannot share any additional details at this time and neither can other BOD members therefore any information other than the press release is rumor or speculation. In my opinion MTF will not have a seat on the restructured BOD. Any proposed restructure will have to be approved by the voting representatives at this year's annual meeting. This week in Eugene, OR Law and Legislation is meeting to begin drafting those changes. Becky Sisley will continue to be a temporary L&L representative until a replacement for her can is found. If interested contact me.

The MTF Executive Committee will meet via conference call on July 22 and in person on August 6 in Spokane, OR to discuss our future.

Speaking of the future many of you have asked me if I intend to run for reelection and my answer is yes. I view restructure as a significant opportunity for positive change and intend to provide the leadership.

Don't be part of the rumor mill email or call me.

Treat at Spokane nationals: Meet pioneer David Pain!

David Pain, who almost singlehandedly started masters track in North America and Europe, will attend the USATF Masters National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Spokane -- 40 years after he organized the first USA masters nationals in San Diego in 1968. He'll be 86 when he arrives August 8, accompanied by his wife, Linda, and daughter Robin. Although he was a champion middle-distance runner in his 40s and a bicycling star into his 70s, he now uses a wheelchair. (But Pain, a retired San Diego lawyer, is as sharp mentally as ever. Last year he completed a term as a member of the San Diego County Grand Jury.)

He will not compete at Spokane. But he'll be honored at the Athletes Banquet, and he'll attend the final three days of the meet, watching the event from the midfield shade tent where Peter Taylor does his announcing.

Pain's trip is being subsidized by the USATF Masters Track & Field Committee, which recently voted (unanimously) to approve a request for some money to help pay for travel and lodging. (The amount is $1,200.)

The Spokane Local Organizing Committee had earlier turned down a request to bring the Pains to Spokane. So Masters T&F Chairman Gary Snyder and his group took up the request at my behest. I have thanked Gary profusely.

The 40th anniversary trip was my idea. The Pains are now ticketed for Spokane and eager to see how their baby has grown up.

David's presence at Spokane will provide masters athletes a rare opportunity to meet the man who launched a thousand meets and introduced track to the over-40 populations of many countries. His legacy is the masters circuit, including the world masters track championships. He also helped found the World Association of Veteran Athletes, now called WMA (World Masters Athletics).

My dream is that Spokane entrants take a moment to seek David out and tell him what masters track has meant for their lives and health. David is truly our founding father.

See you in Spokane!

British Columbia masters setting records up north

Eugene may be the center of the track universe this week (and next 10 days), but masters track isn't ceasing. Farther up the Left Coast, British Columbia masters set some records (Canadian mainly), reports this newspaper account. Jeff Hartwig jumps in a short bit in the men's prelims at the Olympic Trials, so be sure to wander over to my live Eugene Trials blog.

Bradstock bid for Trials: 'Not asking for special favors'

Roald Bradstock, the British Olympian who still throws 230 feet in the javelin at age 46, has been on a rollercoaster the past week as he seeks confirmation of his fate: Will he or won't he compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials? An American citizen since 1996, Roald has gotten different signals on the size of the men's javelin field in Eugene next week. Currently, he's out. The cut is supposedly at 24, and he's No. 25. But who knows what tomorrow will bring? Maybe his appeal for fairness on the Track & Field News message board might sway some tiptop USATF official. RB appears to be a victim of some questionable decision-making. At least Jeff Hartwig is in at 40.

Here's what Roald posted on the T&FN message board:

I am not asking for exception or special treatment! I am asking for fairness -- nothing else.

I threw 72.02m in the time frame specified at a USATF sanctioned meet.

I was 2nd to enter my event and the first to declare for the OT. As expected I moved down to 24 on the list of entries and that was where I remained through the entry deadline. I made the "minimum desired number of athletes" for my event - whew....

Last week I called USATF and asked about Doug Leftler who had thrown 75.52m but was not listed. They informed he was not listed because he was not a US Citizen. So I remained 24th for a week past the entry deadline and 2 days + past the appeals to entrys.

After waiting for weeks to finalize my travel schedule I booked plane tickets, made hotel and car reservations fot the OT. I have 2 jobs as does my wife we have 4 kids I could not wait til the day before.

Then just hours after I finilaze my plans Doug Lefter name pops up on the list of entries ( he is a US citizen ) and then by the next morning he is confirmed and Adam Burke has an updated mark he has entered form 2006 way before the time frame given by the USATF!

I followed all the rules and in my book I made it in.

Anyone that knows me knows how much I love Track and Field and I love throwing. It has been a life long passion and pursuit.

I not asking for any special favors just to be treated fairly.

USATF banishes Masters T&F from its governing board

Details are sketchy, but my sources indicate that the USATF Board of Directors last Saturday voted -- at the USOC's gunpoint -- to shave members off its board, including our representative: Chairman Gary Snyder of the USATF Masters T&F Committee. So far, USATF has issued only a cryptic statement on the reorg. My sole source writes me: "As predicted, the USATF Board of Directors voted Saturday to reduce their size to 15 from 30-plus, eliminating the representation of Masters Track & Field."

My source continued:

This was in response to pressure from the USOC to emulate the USOC board of 9. I understand all committees will continue to operate in the same fashion with a chair etc. but won't have a seat on the B o D. Actually I understand that 3 of the members of the new board will be outsiders and a sport committee chair cannot sit on the board as at the same time holding a chair position.
In the run-up to this vote, former masters chair Bob Fine wrote the USATF Associations listserve:
I've suggested that the professionals (high performqnce) have their own funding and internal structure, satisfatory to the USOC and leave the Youth, Masters, Associations & Officials alone.

My personal opinion is that the Masters would do better on our own. I don't want to leave USATF as I care about the sport and feel that the Masters are providing officials, administrators and coaches. However, if any new structure keeps the Masters out of the loop then the Masters are not being given a choice.

Multiple sources also say that Gary, our leader, wasn't present for the vote. In military parlance, this is called being AWOL -- a dereliction of duty.

The ultimate fallout is hard to say.

But this we know:

USATF has done masters few favors, and now we're in a position of diminished authority. We literally have no seat at the table.

Final seating arrangements won't be made official until the USATF national convention this winter in Reno, but it looks as if masters track has been told: Go to hell.

What will we say in reply?

Did Midwest flooding wash away masters deca nationals?

Last weekend, Joplin, Missouri, was scheduled to host the USATF National Masters Decathlon Championships. But so far, I can't find a Web site that hosts the results of this meet, which was to include visiting British athletes in a "decathlon challenge." The list of entrants shows some superstars. Was the meet rained (or flooded) out? If anyone can solve the mystery of the missing deca at Missouri Southern State University, please let us know. Thankee!

Here's a great little preview article of the meet, which ran a week ago in a Joplin newspaper:

Former top 10 athletes to compete at MSSU

Hughes Stadium on the campus of Missouri Southern State University in Joplin will be the location of the 8th annual Masters Decathlon/Heptathlon Championships and the Decathlon Challenge between the US and Great Britain. The two-day event, free to the public, will begin tentatively at 9 a.m., June 21, rain or shine.

Athletes aged 30 to 81 will compete in this biennial event first held in 1994 in Sheffield, England by a group of former top 10 world champs who in part wanted to develop a team concept. The Brits lead the series 5 to 3.

While the event has been played in Buffalo, New York, Tom Thorne of Neosho, a former participant and local event organizer, said that staging it in mid America hosted by the Decathlon Midwest Track Club and sanctioned by the USATF Missouri Valley would allow participants to "find out what the real US is like," especially by staying in local host homes. A while back Dwight Douglas, a Missouri Southern Board of Trustees member and Julio Leon, Southern president, were convinced that the university's superior track and field could be put to use for this event.

The participants, who must be members of the USATF or other IAAF member federation, compete in five year age divisions. There are no qualifying standards. Events scheduled for Saturday include the 100 yard dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metre; for Sunday the high hurtles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 metres for men and 800 metres for women. While the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on campus has been reserved for some field events other events will take place outdoors rain or shine.

Some of those carrying the banner for the British team will include Bruce and Jackie Charles. Bruce Charles is a frequent medalist in combined events in the United Kingdom and was a bronze medalist in the 2003 European Indoors Masters Pentathlon.

Jackie Charles is the current European Indoor Pentathlon Champion and, in 2007, was the silver medalist in the triple jump in the World Masters Championships in Italy and was awarded the bronze medal in the heptathlon. Recently she took silver in the pentathlon and triple jump in the World Indoor Masters Championships in France and bronzes in the 60-metre hurdles and the long jump.

Alastair Duncan also will compete in Joplin. In the 2007 BMAF Indoor Pentathlon, he has the gold medal in the decathlon, the silver medal in pentathlon, and bronzes in the 60 meter hurdles long jump.

Hazel Baker is the current British champion at heptathlon, the current British champion in the women's (age 45 group) at the Indoor Pentathlon. She was fourth in her age group last year in heptathlon at the World Championships in Riccione, Italy. She also holds the silver medal in pentathlon from the last European championships held in Poznam, Poland.

Always a popular figure and superstar with athletes on both sides of the Atlantic, Snowy Brooks, who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics, will attend the event, but injuries will prevent him from competing. Instead he will be on hand at all the events to meet and visit with old friends.

When asked why only two women have entered the event as opposed to 11 men, Thorne said that he guessed "the rest of us aren't very smart" implying that women might have a more realistic notion of jumping hurtles after the age of 30.

Many volunteers are needed. If interested, contact Tom Thorne at (417) 451-7417. The deadline for registering for the events has passed. However, on-site registration is $50 and limited to time available.

Peter Taylor seeking assistants for Spokane nationals

Peter Taylor is an ironman at nationals, putting in ungodly hours as he does God's work announcing the meets. He'll reprise this gig in August at Spokane, but he's not assuming the LOC will provide spotters and refreshment aides. So on his behalf, I'm posting Pete's appeal: "I need an assistant (ideally one for each of the four days). . . . for keeping the papers straight. . . contacting the people at the discus, shot, etc. to see who are the leaders . . . finding out how high the bar is in the HJ and PV . . . . handing me sheets to announce the photography groups, the T-shirt groups, the sponsors, etc." And last but not least: "keeping me from going nuts."

Peter also writes: "Yes, put out the word, and in doing so thank Larry Libow again for his great work as an assistant at Boston in March."

Done.

To inquire about being Pete's helper at Spokane, contact him directly.

Thanks for considering this!

Comfort for Southern masters: Meets are coming up

Even though Baton Rouge hosted the masters nationals back in 2001, the Southern states haven't been known as a hotbed for masters track. Now some folks in the USATF Southern Association are trying to change that. This weekend, the association is returning to LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium for its regional masters championships. And some big names are entered, including M55 all-world sprinter Bill Collins and multi-event champion Robert Baker. The association also has launched its own message board. I sent a message to the meet director of Saturday's shindig, Byron D. Turner, and he graciously replied. Byron is an Army officer. But this weekend, his mission is putting on a good show for the masters.

Here's my quickie Q&A with Byron:

Masterstrack.com: Tell me about yourself -- where you live, what your main day job is, and what your track background is.

Byron Turner: I live in Baton Rouge, LA; I work for Fannie Mae. I competed from age 14-25, began coaching three years ago.

Do you compete as well? If so, what's your age group and events?

I am trying if my hamstring acts right 35-39 is my age group/sprints 100 & 200. However, I recently learned how to throw the hammer, so I may try that in a few meets.

What obstacles did you overcome to revive masters track in your region?

Getting the word out. So many people we have discovered are interested in Masters track, we just need to get the word out that it exists.

Are you getting any help from the local USATF association?

Yes, I'm doing this on behalf of the association. . . . I was interested in competing so I asked the leadership of the association who was heading the masters program. There response was no one -- but since I asked, I could do it. I guess the rest is history.

What are your ambitions for masters track in your area?

There are four key objectives:

A. I want to grow masters track to 500 athletes with at least 100 competing per meet.

B. I want to host an average of 2-3 joint meetings with youths. I know they make for longer days, but we have to use the youth program as a feeder system for our masters program. By the youth seeing actual competition of masters should allow them to see that they don't have to stop competing at 18.

C. Increase open participation, which will also feed into masters program. With every meet, we allow open athletes to compete. What we have discovered is there is a fairly large population of athletes who have completed there college eligibility or just didn't go to college but still desire to compete. They are not elite athletes, so what do they do? They now can compete with us.

D. Create a track season lasting from February to October with an average of one meet per month.

Are you getting any advice or support from USATF Indy?

They have helped me tremendously with linking me with resources. I was fortunate to attend the national meeting in Hawaii last year and attended several masters sessions. For a fact, my biggest help has come from my Regional Chair, Lester Mount, and the Masters Committee Vice President Janet Smith. They both have served as mentors to mem and I'm very much appreciative.

Sounds like Byron is off to a great start. Please support your local masters track meets! Show up!

Los Gatos results show Glynn going even higher in vault

Results from the USATF Pacific Association Masters Championships (see below) have Kay Glynn down for 10-1 1/4 in the W55 vault -- probably 3.08 meters -- not the 3.07 cited earlier as a world age-group record. A fantastic jump no matter what. (Kay also won the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Whew!) Other events at Los Gatos High School over the weekend had their stars as well, including M70 sprinter Gary Sims, who clocked 13.80 and 28.19. And Olympians Amy Acuff (high jump) and Kevin McMahon (hammer) did some tuning up before the Trials.

Fred Baer did a nice writeup on the meet, especially the throwers:

OLYMPIC TRIALS BOUND MCMAHON SETS SAN MATEO COUNTY HAMMER RECORD AT CSM IN MATCH-UP WITH MENTOR AND 3-TIME OLYMPIAN ED BURKE

By Fred Baer
Pacific Association Media Chair / Track and Field Writers of America Secretary

SAN MATEO, June 22, 2008 -- The longest hammer throw in San Mateo County history highlighted an Olympian showing at College of San Mateo Sunday for the throwing portion of USA Track & Field's Pacific Association Masters Championships.

Two-time Olympian Kevin McMahon, who came out of retirement just over a month ago, spun the 16-pound implement 243 feet, three inches to highlight a day of throwing at the spectacular CSM field facility, which overlooks the Bay. PA Masters Championship medals for athletes over age 30 were awarded to the top three finishers in each five-year age group.

Competition was open to all athletes, however. So 19-year-old CSM freshman Kelly Young took advantage of the opportunity on her home field to compete in all five throwing events, including the weight throw (for the first time) - and provided the leading mark. The MVP of the Northern California Community College Championships also had the top mark in the shot put and hammer throw.

HALF CENTURY OF USA OLYMPIC HAMMER THROWERS TAKE SPOTLIGHT:

But the focus was on the men's hammer throw, which featured a half century of USA Olympic throwing, headed by three-time Olympian Ed Burke. His South Bay Explorer Scout Post pioneered throwing opportunities for teenagers, including McMahon, in the 1980's. Burke, 68, had the third best throw Sunday, 171-6, to easily top his age group (in which he set a world master's record of 182-10 at the 2006 PA Masters Championships).

The 24-year-span of Burke's three Olympics, from 1960 to 1984, holds the record for the longest span of Olympic competition by an American runner or field athlete (along with discus thrower Al Oerter, 1956-1980).

McMahon, 36, won the USA Junior National title in 1991 as a Bellarmine Prep grad and went on to earn U.S. Olympic Team berths in 1996 and 2000. Now a teacher at Bellarmine and the throws coach at Stanford, he retired from competition after becoming an alternate for Athens with a fourth place finish at the 2004 Olympic Trials.

"I started playing with again it a year ago with a light hammer," McMahon said. "But my first competition wasn't until Modesto in May." At the May 10 California Relays at Modesto, he threw 246-4, which ranks No. 3 among Americans this year going into the Olympic Trials.

He ranks No. 4 all-time among Americans at 260-0, which he achieved in 1999. A.G. Kruger is the only American to throw that far since 2000 and is the current U.S. leader at 258-2.

"I was just looking for another competition before the Trials," McMahon said when asked why he was competing when many athletes are in their finals Trials preparation. "I hadn't competed for awhile (four weeks). I had heard this was a great facility to throw."

It was almost too good. McMahon showed consistency by hitting on the far embankment on all six of his throws (all over 230 feet and 70 meters), including one just out of the sector and well up the embankment that was unofficially measured at 246-10. His Stanford coaching duties had kept McMahon busy through last week's NCAA championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Long time area observers, such as Burke and CSM throws coach Mike Lewis, could not recall any athlete previously surpassing 240 feet in San Mateo County.

TRIALS TRIVIA: McMahon ranks No. 6 and Burke No. 8 on the all-time list of top hammer throwers at the Olympic Trials.

MCMAHON PUBIL SARAH VERESS (HOPPINS) OF SF IS NO. 7 ENTERING WOMEN'S HAMMER TRIALS:

--Stanford grad Sarah Veress (formerly Hoppins) won the women's hammer with a throw of 220-7. The San Francisco resident, who is coached by McMahon and trains with him at Stanford, was trying to reach the Olympic "A" standard of 228-0. She ranks No. 7 entering the Olympic Trials with a best of 223-9.

NOTE: Only throwing events were conducted at San Mateo. All other events were contested at Los Gatos High School.

'T.R.A.C.K. Live!' determined to soldier on -- in secrecy

The masters track reality TV show is game on -- for now. Despite rumors of "T.R.A.C.K. Dead!" a recent email communication from producer Julia Dudley to entrants suggests that Phase 2, which includes Olympian coaches helping masters athletes train for the next meet, will take place in July. But Julia signs off with this dyspeptic note: "Although some of you may be curious as to the many happenings of the show, please do not ask the contestants or coaches who were there because they are under a confidentiality agreement. This prevents said false rumors or information that circulated through blogs the first time around."

Well, since Julia never responded to my queries, it's hard to determine the truthiness of my earlier blog entries. Whatever.

Here's the note she sent to participants:

Dear Contestant Athletes, Greetings! We are happy to say that we got through level one of T.R.A.C.K. Live! this past June, which started off a little bumpy but ended up with the best of expectations! We just shipped off the last of our contestant athletes who are happily on their way home! Because this is the first season of a show like this, we have learned many lessons on the way, and have ironed out issues as we went along. We are currently preparing for phase two for the Olympic and Collegiate level coaching of T.R.A.C.K. Live! in July.

In regards to phase two of T.R.A.C.K. Live!, please know that we will be sending you a confidentiality agreement via mail to be signed and faxed or mailed back to us before we can discuss any travel arrangements with contestants.

If you are not able to attend phase two, then we ask that you email us back letting us know, so that we can also inform the T.R.A.C.K. Live! coaching staff.

Please email your response to: tmckinney@annmariepro.com (Please note that if this agreement is not received, then we cannot diverge any other information to you about the show.) Please note for those of you wanting to attend phase two, there must be a commitment of at least a week to work on some of the community and team challenges. We have been able to work around some of the athletes schedules based on their attendance of five days or more.

If you know that it is impossible for you, then we ask that you wait for season two. Please do not send your comments or responses to this email.

All travel comments send to tmckinney@annmariepro.com

Although some of you may be curious as to the many happenings of the show, please do not ask the contestants or coaches who were there because they are under a confidentiality agreement. This prevents said false rumors or information that circulated through blogs the first time around. We appreciate your patience! Sincerely, Julia

British team claims 4x100 relay world record for M35

An M35 British team of Darren Scott, Mark Dunwell, Jim Tipper and Anthony Leigh yesterday clocked 42.51 in the 4x1 at an international triangular meet in Ashford, Kent, England, reports our friend Pete Mulholland. Pete writes: "Looks like Great Britain has snatched the M35 4x100m WR from your guys who set the listed mark of 42.62 at the WMA Champs at San Sebastian in 2005. The event was an International, GBR v France v Belgium." Full results are here. The record remains "soft," however, since an American M40 team holds the listed WR of 42.20.

Here are the listed M35 and M40 4x100 records:

M35 42.62 Peete,Thomas,Jones,Drummond USA 03.09.05 San Sebastian
M40 42.20 Strong; Stephen; Berry; Gault USA 02.05.04 Irvine
Here are yesterday's results:
4x100m Relay
1 GBR 42.51 1 Darren Scott 2 Mark Dunwell
3 Jim Tipper 4 Anthony Leigh
2 GBA 43.94 1 Derek Morgan 2 Rohan Samuel
3 Chris Millard 4 Dalton Powell
3 FRA 45.56 1 Jean-Luc Baralle 2 Laurent Saviard
3 Frédéric Duclovel 4 Antonio Alberto
4 BEL 46.75 1 Dirk Bonte 2 Johan Pieroni
3 Jean-Louis Cabay 4 Marc Pottiez
The Brits' record may not last the summer, though, because Matt Clark in Northern California is hoping to put together an M35 team to crash through the 43-second barrier. Stay tuned.

Here's a photo of the happy new world-record holders from Tom Phillips:

Stacy Dragila pops a 15-5 a week before the Trials

According to a report on the T&FN message board, Stacy Dragila today vaulted 4.70 meters (15-5) -- another W35 world age-group record. It's also among the top 5 jumps in the world this year! The mark, 5 inches below her PR, was made at the Olympic Training Center southeast of San Diego. 4.70 on the Age-Graded Tables is equivalent to an Open (20-30) mark of 5.32 (17-5 1/2). We've also learned that W55 Kay Glynn topped a Phil Raschker WR at Los Gatos High School in Northern California. Mastersrankings.com reports that Kay went 3.07 (10-0 3/4). That beats the listed WR of 3.05 (10-0) by Phil in 2002. Nice jumping, ladies!

Here are results from Chula Vista (the OTC):

Sneak preview of my Eugene Olympic Trials blog

This coming Thursday, I'll take an Alaska Airlines flight to Portland, and then to Eugene, for a little track meet they hold every four years or so. Some of our masters track friends will be there --competing in open events as well as exhibitions. It's the greatest meet on Earth! The Olympic Trials. And I'll be reprising my 2004 Sacramento blog, which drew thousands of visitors from around the world. I hope you'll visit my Eugene Trials blog as well. My first entry is up, and it relates a story I told in 2004 of an Olympian who failed to qualify for the Athens team. He was asked if he'd be back for another try in 2008. His reply: "Absolutely not -- no chance." Of course, he kind of changed his mind. His name? Jeff Hartwig.

Stacy Dragila flirting with 15 feet as Olympic Trials near

Stacy Dragila raised her year-old W35 pole vault record a year ago to 4.55 meters (14-11) at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California, last weekend. Details are posted on polevaultpower.com. Stacy is 37 but has a shot at making another Olympic team. Only two American women have higher outdoor marks this season. Her fans are out in force. Go Stacy!

Zola Budd coming to America for masters running cash?

Two years ago, the former barefoot teen sensation Zola Budd said she was interested in competing on the masters circuit -- at least on the roads. (I blogged her interest.) This week, local press reports in South Africa indicated she was ready to cross the Pond and race in America -- at age 42. We learn: "Well-known Free State athlete Zola Budd-Pieterse and her family are moving to the United States, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Thursday. However, Pieterse said she was not leaving for good and would return to South Africa at some stage, the report said. She said the rumours that she and her family were emigrating were rubbish."

The report continued:

Pieterse said she received a work permit for two years to compete in masters' athletics meetings across the US.

She was not sure where in the US the family would live as the races would be held in various places across the US.

The report said Pieterse indicated that her husband Mike Pieterse, a Bloemfontein businessman, was "definitely going with her".

Their two children would also spend the two years in the US because she was not going to "leave them alone in South Africa for two years".

The family intends leaving for the US at the end of July. -- Sapa

Well, well. Welcome back to the USA, Zola! But take care if you run across Mary Decker Slaney. I think she still bears a grudge about 1984.

(You're welcome in Spokane, though!)

Trojan Masters track meet at USC bites the dust this year

Trojan Masters TC majordomo Eugene Driver, a former masters sprint champion, sends the sad news: "Due to low finances and high stadium fees, the Trojan Masters meet will not be held this year, Hopefully we will see you in '09!" The Trojan meet (which I photographed a couple years ago) is held at the great track at the University of Southern California, not far from the site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics. Also, a meet update from Mark Cleary: The USATF Western Regional Masters Championships will be July 12-13 at Cal State San Marcos. The meet Web site includes results from previous years. July 1 is the postmark deadline to avoid incurring a late fee of $20.

Run and take the money: Masters Athlete roadie article

The current issue of Masters Athlete magazine has a nice two-page spread on how masters road runners can make money at selected events. It's kind of short and could use more detail on how to find money races, but I better not criticize the author too much or my wife will get mad. Anyway, I was limited to 600 words (and wrote 700 anyway.) Here's my article posted on Masters Athlete Daily. My thanks to the sources for this story. Sorry I didn't have space to quote you all.

A birthday gift: online workout log via masterstrack.com

It's my party, and I'll pry if I want to. Do you keep a training diary? Do you do it on paper or via computer? Well, yesterday was my 54th birthday, and I'm offering you a present: Record your workouts and share the info via a new Web service with a familiar logo: masterstrack.com. Check out this great new tool. I didn't create the site (Chris Dellinger of Fitness Partners did.) But I've agreed to partner with Chris, since this is really cool: a free online training diary that never gets lost or eaten by the dog. Chris wrote me: "Originally (back in 1998) we created an online fitness training log for the members of our site, but starting in early 2008 we started offering our features to other websites free of charge. I found your site via the StumbleUpon service and thought that our services might make for an interesting partnership between our sites."

He listed his services:

* Multi-sport training log (running, biking, swimming, weight lifting, aerobics, etc.)
* Training Calendar (monthly view of all past and upcoming workouts)
* Ability for members to create personal fitness goals and to challenge others to these goals
* Progress reporting for each user
* User Management (membership tracking)
* Upcoming Events Management
Chris makes money from the Google adsense ads posted on the site (like the ones I have). I checked out his log, and it looked sophisticated but easy to use. So now it's yours to try.

Over time, if the demand exists, we can add more tools to the site. Let me know what you think!

Here are some sample log pages (without the blanks filled in):

Jim Sorensen, star of 2007, making a summer comeback

Jim Sorensen, WR man
A year ago, the big story in masters track was Jim Sorensen's attempts at a sub-4 mile at age 40. He set world records at 800 and 1500 but came up short on the mile (although he did claim the American record). But his goal for 2008 was qualifying for the Olympic Trials. (And more than half the respondents to a poll thought he could make it.) That dream collapsed amid injuries and setbacks, however. He was hobbled for three months. Now he's feeling healthy again and ramping up his mileage. In a quickie Q&A this week, Jim told me he's considering a try at 10K at masters nationals in Spokane -- and maybe competing at Lahti worlds in 2009.

Here's my chat with Jim, who wrote back to me yesterday:

Masterstrack.com: What's your injury status now?

Jim Sorensen: Well I didn't run from Feb. 15 to about May 15 – three months. It was an Achilles sheath issue that required aggressive ultrasound and rest. Three sessions usually helps, but I had to go through six sessions. I still feel it some and wonder how it will hold up to rigorous training. My weeks since mid-May have been 3-5 runs a week. I have hit 4, 9, 16, 15, 27, and 21 miles per week. So I am coming back slowly. School (my teaching job) is now out and I plan to hit 30 miles this week and keep progressing slowly. With no school, I should be able to do a little more.

When was your last track competition?

The youth exhibition meet last July, where I set the American Record of 4:04.98. I also did a few road and cross country races in the fall of 2007. I focused on quantity of races instead of a few quality races. It was fun running the cross country circuit, something I hadn't been able to do in a long while.

Do you plan to race on the track this season?

Well it all depends on my summer training. I will obviously work on my base and getting the miles up. I may do the USA Masters nationals if I get in shape and my Achilles is healthy. Perhaps I can do a 10K.

Have you followed the progress of fellow middle-distancers Alisa Harvey and Aeron Arline Genet, Tony Young? If so, any comments?

I look at results here and there and see Alissa's name come up and Aeron quite a bit. Aeron lives in california so she does a lot of the local races. so the odds are that I will see her name. I think she ran 4:21 or 22 this year at age 40. It's just great to see her continuing with the training. I actually dated her back in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. When I see her at meets, we usually chat for a bit. Alissa ran great indoors, like 2:05 for the 800. And Tony Young and John Hinton, Nolan (Shaheed), and others just keep on running.

What are your latest track goals/ambitions/hopes?

Just to get healthy and train. I can't have any goals without that. so, I just want to start training again, get in shape, and then race the roads, track or cross country. It doesn't matter. I would be motivated to train for a 1/2 mile or for a 1/2-marathon. I just want to run.

Will you consider running at Lahti, Finland, the masters world championships in 2009?

I will consider anything. I just need to get in shape and be able to run.

How did your middle school's track team do this year?

It was a great year. The girls finished second and the boys finished first in both track and cross country. The cross country team had about 125 members on the team; 100 kids ran at the league final. We had to have a third race (co-ed) at each league race since so many kids were running cross country.

What has this year taught you about masters track?

Well, I can't say I learned that I am fragile, because I already knew that. I have had injury and setback problems since college. And even though I knew this, I realized that I still want to train. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the time off from running, like getting on my mountain bike some, and staying late at work more often. I took advantage of the time away from running. But now that I am running more, I am thinking big again. I am looking forward to today's run and seeing how the summer goes.

Any other reflections on rehabbing and comebacking?

One cool thing about this injury is, assuming I can get back to training rigorously, is the timing. Often, my racing season ends mid-summer, then I back off for a few weeks before I start to build again. That process takes the whole summer and then school starts again. Summer is actually a great time for me to enjoy running and train well, but that doesn't happen when I wrap up my track season in July, rest some, and then build up slowly.

By the time all that happens, the nice warm, work-free days of summer are gone. The injury has put me on a different schedule. So if all goes to plan, I can utilize this summer for some great training.

Hot throwing at Southwestern Association masters meet

Mesquite, Texas, hosted the USATF Southwestern Association masters championships over the weekend (results below), and some great throws were recorded by the likes of Ken Jansson, Ken Ellis, Bob Ward and Steve Patridge, who had an M50 shot mark of 15.29 (50-2). Also, W50 sprinter Cindy Steenbergen clocked a nice 1 and 2. Thanks go to M70 sprint star Wayne Bennett, who provided these results.

Here are complete results:
