Chinese runner’s goal: Guinness world record for most gold medals

Chen Xuhua likes to show off her track medals.

The Malaysian-based Star2 website posted a story about China’s Chen Xuhua of Jinan, Shandong province. “At the Perth 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships… Chen won the 5,000m and 2,000m steeplechase for women in the 75-79 age group,” it notes. (Her times: 25:56.79 for 5K and 11:30.55 for 2K steeple.) She also was fifth in the 400 (1:35.51) and second in the 10K (56:06.57). The retired kindergarten teacher who taught singing and dancing has a goal I’ve never seen uttered before: “My three sons also like sports, partly because of our influence. I will continue running. And try to realise another dream – applying to Guinness World Records for the most gold medals won by an amateur runner.” That’ll be hard to prove. But it’s great fodder for chatter. How many golds have y’all won? (She says she has 119.)

I remember a large gunny-sack full of past medals being passed out for meet medals by Gordon at his summer meets in Alabama. I remember seeing some 1970s and 1980s masters meet medals in the bag.
Thought it was a good idea … some cool medals.

That’ll be very hard to prove indeed, I even have no idea how many I have myself. And what about different levels, national, area, world…
I guess Olga Kotelko has the most.

She might want to ask Phillipa Raschker how many she has.

She should just stick to the competition. Going be very hard her to do that.

Dan Buckley over 500 medals .. probably over 100 gold medals ..

I am sure there are many that compete in multiple sports that would have over 200 gold medals when counting multiple sports.

For a Guinness record there needs to be some sort of category. I have not kept good records, but including local meets, senior games, national and world games, I have received well over 250 golds in my 31 year career. Have given nearly all of them away. Once gave over 250 medals (all varieties) to a friend who was in charge of rehabilitation at a local hospital who gave them to patients. She said they loved them.
