Club West Masters Meet back after 3 years — at Westmont College

Three years after its last edition, the fabled Club West Masters Track Meet is back. Long held at ocean-overlooking Santa Barbara City College and then UC Santa Barbara and Moorpark College, the event went dormant in 2014 and 2015 “as we sought a good venue at a reasonable cost,” says Robin Paulsen, Club West interim president. This year’s meet will be Sunday, Oct. 30, at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.  “They have done an incredible job with their facility,” Robin said. “It is truly state of the art. … We have added a standing long jump event for athletes over 60. And we are opening our meet to athletes with a physical handicap. Notice the steeplechase doesn’t have a distance. We have been running a 2000 steeple for 60+ year olds because those were the only competitors. If we get some who wish to run a 3000, we will include both distances.” For meet info, schedule of events, registration info, go to directathletics.com. Here are photos from 2007 Club West meet.

Come and compete on the same track that 2016 Rio Olympic champion Ashton Eaton trained on earlier this year.

Too bad this meet is at the same time as the Worlds in Perth. It has always been a great meet and I hope it is back again for good. Quite often it has gone head to head with other meets. I hope it can be scheduled to maximize participation in the future.

Only 212 Americans (including you) among the 3735 Perth athletes. You go have fun, there’s plenty of us left over to go to ClubWest.

I ran a 2K steeple at this meet when I was 40 I think or somewhere around that age. They don’t need to run a 3K steeple, just offer a 2K steeple <60 and then lower the barriers for the 60+ race. It would probably attract more potential runners on the fence about the steeple because of the distance.

Thank you, Robin, for finding this location, and bringing this meet back for all Masters’ T&F Athletes. Hopefully, enough entrants will ensure it remains a viable meet.

They are using Direct Athletics for registration, but people are complaining about the site not working. It says registration deadline is today, but I’ll give you a little time. If you get your entry to me by noon Friday I’ll get you in the pre-entries.

Bypass the Direct Athletics site and mail your entry to me directly, then pay as you come in the gate.
