Marathon superstar Ed Whitlock and long-sprint/middle-distance legend Earl Fee would rarely face each other on the track, but a relay? Teammates! They and two other M80s — Ray Wardle and Bill Thompson — joined Sunday at the Canadian Masters Athletics Championships to set a 4×400 indoor world record of 6:06.23, beating the listed WR of 6:34.65 by a Canadian team including Ed in 2011. The same four also ran the 4x200m relay Saturday, my sources say, setting a new Ontario and Canadian record, in a time of 2:33.41. Ed also ran on a 4x800m relay on Saturday, before his leg in the 4×200. Christa Bortignon, 76, triple-jumped 7.59 meters (24-11) to break her own W75 WR of 7.43 (24-4 1/2). She was North Central America Caribbean World Masters Athletics Female Athlete of the Year in 2012, after setting 10 world records. Canadian indoor nationals results are here. Thanks to Doug Smith for these photos!

Both Bill and Ed were part of the previous WR team. All of these awesome athletes were busy on the weekend in other events as well. Ray broke a Canadian record in the 50 metres, and Ed established a Canadian record in the 3000m. Ray ran 50m, 60m, 200m, and 400m races. Bill ran 60m, 200m and 400m, and Earl ran 400m and 800m. Ray will want to get his calf cramp feeling better so he won’t miss playing any hockey this week. All of these guys are from Ontario too. We’re growing them strong and fast! Can’t wait to see them when they’re 90!

The Great Earl and the great Ed Whitlock with two other speedsters. Hey Earl, you’re looking pretty youthful; sorry you won’t be running the 400 in Landover this Friday.

Wow. These Canadian 80-year-olds are truely an inspiration.

Right. I will be 80 in 2019. Despite everything I am still a British citizen and I can still run a 400m. Let’s plan for a M80 GBR 4x400m relay team and beat that indoor M80 4x400m relay record. Any other GBR people interested? (Just hope the Germans are not reading this.)

Congratulations to both the Canadian W50 4×8 and the M80 4×4 teams on their new W.R.’s! I am glad to see my super hero, Earl Fee is healthy and running well, even if he won’t be with us in Landover. рџ™Ѓ Happy Birthday Earl! I know it is around this time. Also, glad that Patty Blanchard is continuing to show what a great athlete she is.
