I just started high jumping. I can jump pretty good, but try as I might I can't make myself dive over the bar so that my head and shoulders get lower than my hips, especially when I try to jump high. Does anyone have any tips? Thanks.

Not sure the arch should be a prime focus. Takeoff is everything, and the body position before takeoff is key to that.

Having said that, I think the European women who use the lead-arm technique may be on to something. In this clearance technique, they throw their lead arm over the bar first -- and the body follows.

I tried this while training when Phil Fehlen years ago, and it seemed to help my "arch," but I haven't practiced it much since.

I could arch my back at age 30 at least:

Thanks for the tip, Ken. I tried that lead arm thing yesterday, but nothing followed! Maybe I will just have to try another event: One called the how-high-can-you-go-in-a-sitting-position challenge.

Great photo. Are you sure that isn't Dick Fosbury himself?

hehehe.

I'm the world champeen at sitting Flop!

The photo above was taken by Chris at a Los Gatos HS All-Comers meet around 1984. (That's where Joy Margerum used to hold court.) That day, jumping was effortless. My center of mass was directly above my takeoff point -- and I just EXPLODED up and up!

Haven't had that feeling much lately.

Most flaws in the flop can be traced to a poor takeoff, which is dependent on the run-up. Here's an article on Ross Dunton's site the dissects the run-up from an elite perspective. Still, there's a lot to benefit masters:
