I was able to run a 19:29 5K tempo run today with no pain in the hip / groin area. It was tight the first 1/2 mile but loosened up. Felt good, but breathing a little hard with 1/2 mile to go due to cut back in training the last 6 weeks. It was nice to open up my stride again.

Good work R&S. Glad the hip is better. Ran 8K college cross country meet in Wichita Kansas on Friday at a place called Lake Afton. First race over 5K in 20 years. Ran at a steady pace and placed 71st out of 105 college runners in 32:20 on a fairly tough course. It's always fun running cross country but that was a little far. May try it again later this season.

Ran hard enough to dry-heave twice at the end of my workout today. Haven't done that for a while. Also, fatigued enough that I was very easily annoyed this evening. When those two things happen I know I didn't hold back much. Wasn't sure if I still could still dig that deep, so anyone doubting him/herself be assured if you were able to put the effort in sometime in the past you can do it again. I am just hoping I can maintain inspired until B-W in July 2011. Train smart and stay healthy!!

Ran Sunday in the Prairie Fire 5K in Wichita. Clocked my fastest masters time ever at 17:30. Putting in more miles with my college cross country team and it has made a big difference. Hope it helps the 800 times later during the indoor season.

I am starting from scratch in my training.
I will build slowly through next spring, starting at 2 miles per day for 10 miles for the week up to 40 miles per week.
I am going to base my training plan on the ones mentioned in Brad Hudson's book -Run faster from the 5K to the marathon.
I will start my speed by introducing hill sprints before advancing to progression runs and track intervals.

I am still feeling the hip / groin area, but it is feeling much better than before.

I was just browsing for meets, and I saw the date change for the Hayward Classic in Eugene.
I guess I will have to get into race shape a little early this year.

29th Annual Hayward Classic

Saturday May 14, 2011 Hayward Field

University of Oregon- Eugene, Oregon

Also USATF Oregon Association Masters Track and Field Championships.

Note that the 2011 Meet is a Single Day Event!

Dang that's way early. I know there's always a battle to get track time between all the other events at Hayward. OTC Masters always gets last priority.

Well, at least they will hold it next year.
They are having the Pre classic on June 3rd, and the USA track and field championships at Hayward field on June 23 - 26. Seems to me there are some open weekends in June.

I hope the have those masters races held before the Oregon meets again this year.
The UCLA meet is being held down in LA this year, so it might only be at the Pepsi team invitational April 9th if they do hold one again this year. If they do hold it, then I would also run the community mile race held at the Elden Kellar invitational (high school meet) held in Hillsboro on April 29th. That would give me three meets each 2 to 3 weeks apart, then over a month training for the summer meet schedule to start.

Here in Salt Lake City masters track and field is not a big sport so finding fast training partners can be a problem. Today I spoke with the local high school sprint coach and he gave me permission to train with the high school boys! WoooHoooo! It'll be interesting to see how I go in training with the 17 year olds and also how they receive me (53 and gray haired).
Will post a report once the snow melts and we start running together.
Cheers,
Jim

Isn't it fun to beat up on those younger than you and then introduce your grand children to them after the race? :D

Well, I haven't done any "beating up" yet so I can't say how much fun. No grand kids yet but I am probably nearly the age of these kids' grandparents.
I'll be interested to see if I'm welcomed by these high school athletes. The high school team I'll be training with doesn't seem to have a lot of fast sprinters so its possible that I will be faster than many (maybe all) of them if I go as well as I hope. I reckon that might be hard on some 17 y.o. egos. I'll do my best not to rub anyone's nose in it and might try starting a few seconds after the group and try to run them down but not pass. Would hate for any of them to go home and complain to mommy and possibly get the coach in trouble for allowing to train with them.
Mainly I am just really thankful to have a group to train with and want to preserve the privilege!

Cheers,
Jim
