I just saw the article on this website's front page about the John Ward Games Masters Track Meet in Santa Ana, CA on April 15th. They have the men's 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races. It sounds like I may be tripling like I did back in high school! LoL!!! :P

It is good to see you keeping this thread going and, more importantly, keeping your sights on your goal.

Last month, I ran a 21:39 5K road race. Not much to brag about, but still lowered my "50-54" PR, and I placed 8th in my age group. Earlier this month, I ran a 3 mile TT in 19:56 (6:31-6:53-6:32) with which I was pleased.

On March 11, I mustered up the courage to travel up to Palo Alto, CA and compete in the CA Senior Games. The 5k was supposed to be a road race, but it was run on the track instead. At first I was happy, thinking I could better pace myself. Wrong! Not enough judges, and so we had to count our own laps and lap times were not being called out. We had to stand around for twenty minutes at the starting line as the officials made sure everyone had bib numbers and hip numbers. There were over 40 runners, so it was crowded.

I took off too fast. My first 800 was 3:00. (My brother in the stands was yelling out the times). I settled down and clocked 6:46 at the first 1600. I was in 3rd place overall, but then runners started to pass me. I lost track of the laps, and literally had to ask a runner who passed me what lap we were on. I couldn't hear my brother yell the times.

With two laps to go, I heard "18:05". Doing the math in my head as best as my oxygen deprived brain would allow, I knew I had to push if I wanted to achieve my goal of sub 21:00. My other goal was to place 4th in my age group (50-54) in order to qualify for the National Senior Games. At this point, I was in 6th place and I had no way of knowing if there were any 55+-aged runners ahead of me. I could only hope. I could also hear a competitor on my shoulder. I had to assume that I was in 4th place for my age group, and I couldn't allow the runner on my shoulder to take the 4th and final qualifying spot, so I pushed hard on this penultimate lap.

On the final lap I just cut loose with all that I had left, painful as it was, and managed to fend off the runner right behind me.

After a 30-minute wait, the final result: 20:55, 1st place M50-54. Where were the other 50 year olds? A couple of 56 year olds ran in the low 18:00's to place 1-2 (almost lapping me twice). And a couple of 60+ guys in the low 19:00s. I salute these gentlemen.

I was astounded by my uneven pace, and the time of my final 800. 2:50?! Had I ran a more even pace, I think I would have run a better time. It was a painful race, which tells me I need to increase my weekly mileage, and enter more races. This was only my 3rd race since returning to running a couple of years ago.

BTW, as a resident of the OC, I would have liked to have entered the John Ward Games, but alas I will be leaving for a well-deserved vacation on the day of the meet.

Great work IBMer! Looking forward to hearing more updates. So I am running in the John Ward Master's meet on April 15 for sure. I will run the 1500m and either the 800m or the 3000m. I'm not sure which one yet.

I had a setback last Friday. I was planning a five mile run. When I first started the run my right calf muscle felt really tight. I thought this was strange since I never get tight calf muscles. I figured it would loosen up later in the run. It stayed tight until right at mile 4 when it just seized up. I had to stop and walk the last mile back to work. I could barely walk and walking up and down stairs was really painful. My wife, a professional massage therapist, massaged the calf muscle. It was really a deep strain. It's gotten better since then. I took Saturday off. On Sunday I did a 40 minute workout on my Nordic Track. And I lifted weights this morning. I may try to run after work today to test out the calf muscle. If I feel any strain at all I'll stop running immediately.

I ran today for the first time since I injured my right calf last Friday. I did an easy 2.5 miles. My right calf is still very sore. I couldn't really push off the right leg because of the soreness.

Thanks for the info runandsew! The right calf is feeling lots better today. The deep soreness feeling is gone.

I ran for 45 minutes last night at 8:03 pace (5.59 miles). My right calf felt really good. I felt just some slight tightness. I hope this injury is behind me.

Ok so I ran the 1500m and 800m at the John Ward Master's meet. I ran 5:35 and 2:43. Not bad but disappointed as well. I guess it's time to do track intervals to get faster. :lol:

Next up is the Pacific Association's Track and Field Master's Championships on May 27th.

The right calf held up great. I scratched from the 3,000m because my body was tired and it was quite windy out there as well.

Anyone here take creatine? Tyson Gay tweeted he had been off of it for a month but going back on it. He says he can't live without it. My other sprinting friends take it as well. I never have so looking for feedback on whether it's beneficial and what side-effects I should expect.
