It's Memorial Day , and I'm roughly 90 days from my birthday. I've had an up and down Spring ; having been sidelined briefly with a calf strain and a mysterious knee pain that went away with rest and new shoes. There are some all-comers meets coming up locally - I want to test myself , but want to remain injury free. I'm beginning to appreciate the magnitude of the challenge , but remain steadfast in my determination to get there. Some of you have mentioned the wisdom of very gradual increases in speed ; giving your body a chance to adapt to the increase in stress. If I can find that elusive patience , I could be dangerous at 52. Happy trails. |

I have new motivation in Jim Sorensen. The 40 year old set a world record in the 1500 with a 3:44 ( 4:02 mile ). I can "dawdle" at almost 15 seconds slower per lap. How hard can that be ? It is amazing that he has a legitimate shot at breaking 4 if he can get into the right open mile. I'll appreciate their greatness , while I cruise along and do the best I can. I did close out my interval workout tonight with a 70 second 400. That was folly , but FUN ! Happy trails ! David |

I'm running in my first track race....in 30 years !!...this Friday night. It is the Mid-Summer Night's Mile , and has progressively faster heats. I'm choosing heat six ( the details are at www.mcrrc.org ) and will enjoy watching the last two heats , assuming I can still stand. Hang back a bit , catch your breath , and try to pass one person. If I could finish close to 5:20 , or even 5:30 ; that will give me something "real" to beat. I still intend to give sub 5 a go on Sept 1st. I am going to eat with more wisdom and train with more purpose as I close in on that fateful day. I hope you are thriving in your training. Get real rest days ( we're all motion junkies , but a casual bike ride counts ) and enjoy every step of - whatever journey you're on. Happy trails ! Chase |

There were 21 runners in my heat at the Mid-Summer's Night Mile. I was 21st after 400 ( 83 ) and 18th after 800 in 2:46 ( another 83 ). At that point I picked it up a bit and started to pass a few more. I came home in 78/76 for a 5:20 - and a win. The elite race had everyone go under 5. Alisa Harvey ran a 4:46 as the only woman in that race. It was won in 4:35 by a younger kid-with-a-kick. Happy trails ! Chase |

Hi David! Wish you good luck that Friday! I also got 50 this year, and I´m just about having a try to a sub-5-minute-mile, actually next week in Vaxioe,Sweden. Two 1500-races earlier this season sub 4:40 would make it possible but not easy. Besides of my 400m and 1000m intervals, I made some 4x 300m at full speed 44-45s with long rest, the "overspeed" making it easier to get relaxed at 73/74s pace. Even shorter intervals made me also getting calf and other muscle problems. Free-speed-alter in forest is also a nice and motivating (and classical Swedish) training. So it ended up 4:58,2, happy but exhausted. First lap 69s (tried to use my brain but couldn´t find it) second lap 78s (leaving that fast M40 guy ahead) third lap 79s (lonely struggling) last lap 72s (in coma) If it had not been for that insane first-lap the race would have been enjoyable... Wow ! If I went out in 69 , they would be scraping me off of the track. What an adventure that must have been. I hope you had the energy to celebrate with friends and fans afterwards. My training is just hitting stride again after a calf strain that kept me slow and sidelined for a few weeks. I'll either gear up for another run at it this Fall , or establish a new base and point toward Spring of 08. I hope you are all enjoying the journey ! Happy trails ! Chase |

After a calf strain which shifted me to cycling and other pursuits , I am on the roads and trails again. My legs feel fresh , even though my aerobic fitness took a hit during the hiatus. I'm looking at Oct 27th as my day to take a stab at this elusive barrier. Wisdom might suggest that smaller increments of improvement makes more sense ( my best - and only - being a 5:20 ).
