My throws with the glide tend to be the same length as with just a warm-up power throw.
My power throws are around 10 meters, which is pretty good, then I add the glide, and I still only get about 10 meters.
Any suggestions as to why?

Post subject:  The shot-put shuffle

Brian Oldfield suggests that old people use the shuffle. It's easier to get across the ring and land in a good position. You won't get any form points but you will throw further.

The shot shuffle: start with your left side pointed in the direction of the throw and trunk turned clockwise (torqued). Shuffle across the circle and land in the throwing position. Turn your right foot, forcefully following with your hips, trunk, shoulders, and finish high with the arm (throw through the hole in the sky). Push through the ball and then reverse.

Thanks, I will give that a try! I got one power throw off Tuesday. I got 35 feet out and about inches deep into the mud.

Post subject:  shot put glide technique.

Tips on the glide for a right handed thrower. After adjusting shot put in neck, put all your body weight onto the right leg and foot. Left foot should be resting lightly on the ground to the left and a 4-8 inches back of right foot for balance. Bend down over a slightly bent right leg with left leg remaining in same spot or it can move a few inches further back towards the toe board from were you placed it when your were standing, as long as your right leg is bearing almost all of your body weight. While bent over and your left arm is relaxed and extending towards the ground in front of you or reaching towards a few inches outside the back of the ring, concentrate on driving with the right leg to get you across the ring instead of using a big left leg drive. Also, when driving with the right leg, think driving your bent over body up towards the sky instead of back towards the toe board. this will help you get your right leg under you easier and put you into a better power position. You'll use less of the ring length, but position is more important than how much of the ring you use and most people use too much of the ring for their size most of the time. This action should be fluid with no pauses once you've started to bend down over the right leg. Also remember to keep the left arm extended and back while driving across the ring to keep you from turning your hips towards the throw too early. It also helps in giving you a longer pull and push on the shotput!!! This technique has been successfull with very young throwers and older throwers who's leg strength is just a bit low at the moment. If you do this right you should see a least a 10% improvement from your standing throw to your glide. If you stand at 35' your glide throw should be 38'-38'6". The better you technique is, your % will improve. I get about a 14-16% improvement from my standing throw to my glide. Good luck to you and big p.r.'s for everyone!! :D

Without seeing you throw, its hard to say exactly what is going wrong, but in a very general way, its most likely one or both of two things.

1. You do not get into as powerful a position from your glide as you start off in for your power throws. Where are your feet when you get to the front of the ring? Where are your hips? Where are your shoulders? Where is your weight centered?

2. You do not get into that position with any extra momentum or "preloading"
for want of a better term, ie you pause. Is the entire motion smooth and flowing? Does your right foot keep turning in the middle of the ring?

I think that is my problem. I threw with a guy who just happened to be practicing in the same place at the same time. He noticed that I do pause from the glide to the actual throw.
