Slow jogging everyday has turned me into just that....a slow jogger. I'd like to get back into some sort of speedwork. In younger days I did a lot of 400's with 200 jog recovery. I was thinking about doing 200's with 200 jog recovery once a week and work my way up to 400's. Since I haven't done intervals in years I thought I'd start with no more than 6x200. Maybe work up to 10x200, then start doing 400's. I'd like to do a sub 6 mile after I turn 60. Currently I doubt I could do 7:30. Any suggestions?

There are a million different training schedules and regimens for hitting a time goal like that. I have tried several, and really like the training schedules in Allen Lawrence's book "The Self Coached Runner II". There are training schedules for breaking a 6 minute mile, 5:30, etc, as well as plenty of general advice on how to get back into base-building, interval training, etc. Most of the schedules are 30 days of base-building followed by 12 weeks of interval training.

Dr. Steven Peters, a world record holding age-group sprinter, talks about his mini interval training philosophy in a UK magazine:
