Well hopefully your foot gets better this winter. Have you had it checked out by a doctor yet?

I've just started training about 3 weeks ago for the first time in 8 years. So far so good. I'm taking it slow, not doing much speed until I get my muscles and joints used to striding again.

What kind of times did you used to run in the 200m and 400m?

No, I did not see a doctor, as I'm one stubborn S.O.B., and believe that I'm smarter and more able treat the injury myself! As for what are my personal bests, I'll answer it this way. I believe with absolute certainty, that If I train and execute properly, that I will run a 23.3-24.0 200M and a 52.0-53.5 400m in 2012. Time will tell!

My wife recently had a foot problem that would not go away. She could barely walk. She ended up going to a foot doctor and it turned out she had a ligament that was irritated. He gave her some anti-inflamitory medicine and within a few days she was 100%. He told her to stay off the flip-flops and it has not come back.

I'm sure that with the time you have to train, you will be able to get those times.

Man, it's hell getting old! Now it's hernia surgery time. Oh well, at least it's the off season. On a good note, the plantar problem is about gone!

Hey Mike,

I had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery a couple of years ago. Took a while but I am getting back to pre-surgery status. Good luck to you.

Thanks Tony! Good to hear you're back in the saddle. Looks like I'll have surgery in January, which should give me plenty of time to recover before I compete again. Uh, that is unless something else goes wrong...................................! :)

Whew....! Hernia surgery completed on 1/13/2010. Now it's recovery time. Funny, I don't remember the doctor saying anything about the pain being similiar to being beaten with baseball bats in the lower mid-section! :(

Mike,
Glad to hear surgery went well. Your pain feels like ball bats - mine felt like being stabbed by daggers. Thank goodness for pain meds. Since you are already posting you are way ahead of my recovery period. You will be back soon. Good luck to you.

Thanks BMo! Today was first day back training, if you can call it that! A little treadmill walking and some isometrics. With a 10lb weight restriction until 2/26, it will be a little bit before I can really get back into it heavy, but it's a start.

It sure is great to be able to experience this sport, even if for the past couple of years it's only been in practice and my mind. (Way too many injuries) I am now back in the swing of things and so far injury free! :D My main goals for this year are to remain injury free, get to competition weight, and go into Winter in competition shape. If I can accomplish this, I will be well on my way to my 2012 goals.

Great Goal..

I would say that you need to have mini goals along the way. You should probably chart out 3 to 4 month goals.

Also, I tell guys that if you think you are going to lose weight by just running, it is probably not going to happen as you get older. You have to be serious about what you eat.

So true! When I began running again 4 yrs ago I was 205lbs. The first ten came off fairly easily but to get a little lower took some real discipline. My coworkers make fun of me when I'm in weight-loss mode as I often have a prenatal vitamin for lunch then go for a run. It borders on obsessive!

I've come to this realization as well. I used to be able to lose weight by thinking about it, but now am counting calories!

Well, it's been a while so, time for an update;

Because of the timing for my goal, I knew it was now or never to develop a base. So, with this in mind I decided to train for a 5K even though I loathe distance running. Because I was 30 pounds heavy and fresh off hernia surgery, I combined a 2000(approx) calorie diet with a very conservative training program. My 5k is scheduled for Labor Day and I'm on target to be 25-27 lbs lighter with a nice strong base to build on this Winter. I hope to keep everthing going through Winter so that I can have a competitive 2011 prior my big year. One great thing so far, is that I've suffered no significant injuries this year. Whew!
