Post subject:  Discus Technique

Is anyone out there using what's called the non-reversing discus technique?-there is a little information on it in Jay Silversters book and I was wondering if anyone had experience using it.

Many former east-block athletes used this technique with great success. I use it sometimes in training to help me stay with the discus longer but have better results using a reverse. Lars Reidal (Olympic gold medal winner) has had several back surgeries using this technique. Successful masters throwers such as Joe Kashmiri and Lad Pataki warned me to stay away from the technique because of the danger to the back.

I think masters can use it successfully if they turn their feet fully during the throw. Most masters don't turn their right food from the throwing position and end up throwing the discus with the arm. This will put an incredible load on the back. Bottom line: the technique will give you a long pull but may pose an acceptable risk to your back.
