A hint for Orono: I have sensitive skin, am prone to skin allergies, and really raise some huge welts when I get stung or bitten by insects. Something I've discovered in the past that helps repel insects is vitamin B-12. Large doses (about 500% RDA) of B-12 apparently can cause your body to have a scent that is repellant to insects, but is not noticeable by humans. Since the B vitamins are water-soluble there's no danger of dangerous buildup in your body as would be the case with the oil-soluble vitamins. This works for pets too. I feed my animals brewers yeast tabs in the spring and it definitely makes a difference with fleas.

Take the large doses about a week prior to exposure. I cannot detect the scent on my skin and neither can my family or friends --(nothing like garlic!) It's something you may want to try in conjuction with topically applied repellants and it may work for you.

They are mean little suckers. They bite so hard they make your skin bleed. However, the meet is so nice that the insects are only a minor deterrent.

Is there a big issue of bugs in Orono?

Was there in 2002, and don't recall any problems with bugs.
