Just took my new Nike zoom Streak XC 2 racing flats out for a test drive.
2.5 mile jog over to local track, ran a 5:25 mile, then 2.5 miles back home.
Shoes pretty light, 6.1 oz for size 12. I will wear them when I race a 5K next weekend. They seem like they will be good for up to a 5K race distance. Look like they are built on the same last as the Nike Matumbo spikes, but only more cushioning.

Hello All:

With six weeks of basic strength training and jogging under my belt I did my first running work out today. There is not much of a track and field scene her in Salt Lake City (essentially no masters track) so I ran with 5k and 10k runners from the local club who do their speed work at a track only a mile from my house. Very nice group of folks. The workout was 6 x 400m run, 200m jog, 200m run. I did 3 of those with them and my times were in the low 80s for the 400s and low 30s for the 200s. All smooth and under control running, no drama and no injuries. I'll be interested to see how sore I am tomorrow because my quads were really stuffed after the last one. Its a long way to competitive times for my age group but you have to start somewhere. Humble beginnings.

Cheers,

Jim

Looking good Jimbo. Just keep it up and slowly up the pace and distance. No need to kill yourself at this point.

Like you, I've joined a 5K/10K/Half-Marathon/Marathon running group on Wed. nights to help with endurance. Been out of competition since March with a chronic Achilles pull. Not serious, but nagging and prevents me to wear spikes and get high on my toes. So all out sprinting is out the door.

Your workouts sound eerily familiar to my Wed. night regimen. Monday's are shorter and more speed work (at least 3/4 speed).

Keep at it my friend.....

I am currently increasing my weekly mileage from 30 miles per week on 5 days running, to 40 miles a week on 5 days training. I will hold this level as my base until next spring, when I hope to get back into racing with some 5K's and hopefully some mile races.
I was able to run a 18:33 in my last 5K race two weeks ago, and will race about 2 more times this fall.
I am hoping to come into track season next year, ready to race with those 5K's under my belt.
This summer, I did no training on the track, and finished injury free, but I only got down to a 2:18 800 meters, next summer, I hope to have more speed indurance to get a faster 800.

Nice 5K time R&S! I hope to lower mine this winter. I've also increased the weekly mileage to about 30 miles (a lot for me anyway). I've also tried to increase the speed endurance workouts. Today I did 4 x 800 w/ 800m jog-rest (2:30, 2:30, 2:32, 2:32). First 5K in 1 1/2 wks.

BMo,
Where are you going to race, at the lake escape in Veneta?
Good luck.
I think I am going to run the co-ed 5K race at the race for the cure in Portland on Sept 20.

Ran a 38:45 10K at the pints to pasta this last weekend, went through the first 5K in 18:39.
I am running the race for the cure 5K this weekend with the 18 minute mark my goal.
I think this road racing will help me when I head back into track training next spring. I feel like I am getting some good speed endurance which I didn't have this summer during my track meets.

Ran my race for the cure 5K.
Went out pretty good, but my left leg had serious problems.
About 9 minutes into the race it felt like a tendon in my leg stained. It hurt from my achilles up into the inner hamstring area.
I slowed up on the pace and tried to run as fast as I could up to the pain barrier of the tendon. I found that I could really propel off of my right stride to compensate.
I finished in 18:23 - 11th overall, 2nd master and first in my age group.
I think if I hadn't strained or did whatever to that leg, I could have broken 18 minutes easily today.
I will rest , and see when I can run again. I had already signed up for a 5K next weekend at the University of Portland. Alberto Salazar is running, and if I am healthy, I have a chance to beat him since he ran a 22:34 there last year. He is sort of the spokesman for the race, and doing a challenge against a local TV news guy.
Hopefully I can race next week, if not, there is another race in three more weeks I would like to run before I go back to my base training.

My main concern is to get my leg healthy, I hope this is not a long term ouchy.

Nice 10 & 5Ks R&S! You're definitely close to dipping under the 18-minute mark. I didn't run as fast as I'd hoped at the Lake escape 5K but managed 18:22. Next weekend I'm going to try again for sub-18. Good luck!

Wow,

You guys are gettin after it. After more than 4 months of healing from a hip flexor injury, I finally ran a two mile race on just 1 week of training. And it showed. 12:36. About two minutes off pace. But that was three weeks ago and I just completed a ladder run starting at 1 min and going up a minute to four minutes, and then back down again. Rested the same as the previous run. The short ones were at about a mile pace the two longs ones were around a 3000 pace. Any other ideas on how to get this leg stronger so I can try to get back to racing again? Please let me know. I'm going to try another two mile October 31st. Keep up the great work everyone.

No sub-18 minute 5K but I did get another PR. 18:10 was the official time (but I SWEAR I came across in 18:09). Anyway, that's a 5:51 pace and I even had to drag my rear out of bed at 0345 in the am to go into work for a few hours. Thank you for the assistance Starbucks! Overall I can't complain. Keep up the good work all!

Great race.

I ran a small 5K race held at the University of Portland yesterday.
The course looped the campus twice and finished around the Chiles center.
It wasn't marked too well at the far side of campus, and the volunteers didn't know exactly where we should turn, so everyone ran further that we should have. I was running a tempo pace due to my hamstring and achilles, and mangaged to stay in the top pack. Finally when we should have been looping around the Chiles center to finish, but were still on the outside sidewalk heading into a third loop, the runner next to me jumped the fence to get to the finish line, and I followed suit. The other two runners kept going and ran an extra 1.5 miles.
I ran 21:45 for what ever distance I ran.
Alberto Salazar was there as a race sponsor, and I got to meet him.
He jogged the race, finishing about 5 minutes behind me

My hamstring and achilles were really acting up on that second loop, so I am going to totally back off for a week, then start back in real short and easy, taking around 4 weeks to get back to where I am now. There is a race with a free entry which I have entered on Nov 7th, here in Hillsboro. I will see if I am healed up then to get a good time.

Again great race and good luck on your training.

Its probably happened to most of us but Saturday was a first for me. Running in a small 2-mile race that has always been well organized with plenty of volunteers and help. Chugging along with about a 10 yard lead at the 1/2 mile mark when I got hit by a car. Police car there and everything but the lady (on a cell phone) when right by him and right into me. Went onto the hood of her car and actually stayed on my feet but had to stop about 4 blocks later because it re-aggravated an old injury. The lady didn't even stop or anything just glared at me for being in the middle of the street. The main thing is I'm OK but that was a first for me. Hope eveyone is running well!!!

Ughhh!!!! Jeeezo!! man, glad you weren't seriously hurt. It's amazing how clueless cell phones can render a driver. What a drag. I am sorry. Heal up so you can get back out there.
