Well after all the stuff with the doctors..I finally got to race this weekend at Wichita State. Found out I still have some speed but I'm REALLY out of shape. This was a college meet. Ran 2:10 in the 800m. The first 600 was great the last....well......hoovered. 28.....33......30 and 39. Oh well. It was still great to get back on the track again. Another college meet this week. We'll try again.

Hope everyone is well.

Ran a 19:01 5K road race Saturday.
Have been dealing with calf issues for a few weeks after some fast tempo runs.
I didn't race all out, but did push the pace in the race.
I have purchased a massage stick to massage my calf muscles, and so far it seems to be helping.

Still on track for my marathon in June, and then onto track after that.

I moved today's tempo pace workout to Sunday to give one more easy day. Last week (3/8 - 3/14) was high stress with full workout on Tuesday, speed on Thursday, and 3k race (9:39) on Saturday. My plantar fascia flared up a little, so I changed this Tuesday's workout from long (VO2max) to speed (5 X 200), and reduced Thursday's (VO2max) to 2 X 5 min.

If I had stayed with my training schedule, I know I would've ended my season with injury.

My calf really acted up on me after that last race, so I am currently in the middle of a two and a half week layoff.
I am stretching, using the massage stick and I borrowed a schwinn airdyne exercise bike from a friend and have been using that since this last Wednesday.

The first day I went 30 minutes on the bike and the other three days so far I have gone 1 hour each.

I am using my heart rate monitor to keep myself at the effort level that I want.
I checked my max heart rate today and got it up to 184 beats per minute. Man that hurts trying to get to that level and hold it for a minute or two. I had it clocked at 187 bpm a few years ago on a run, so I don't know if it has fallen, or I need to try doing repeat 600 meters sprints up a hill to get a more accurate reading.

I did my workout today at about 65% max heart rate for the whole hour ride. (except when I did my three heart rate speed bumps)

Yesterday I did a 15 minute warm up at 60% 30 minutes at 80% and a 15 minute cool down at 60%.

I will continue to use the bike even after I heal up to add low impact anaerobic threshold workouts to my training routine.

Hopefully using the airdyne will help me not to lose much fitness during my layoff. My marathon is in 14 weeks, so I don't want to lose too much, but then again, I don't want this calf still nagging me up to race day.

First outdoor meet of the year. 44 degrees and a 25 mile per hour wind made it tough. Ran at the McPherson College Inv. This was a meet made up of small four year colleges and a couple of JUCO's Ran 4:43 in the 1500 which is very slow but the winning time was a 4:10 from a guy that usually runs about 3:50. Finished 6th out of 20 runners. Most of them don't enjoy getting beat by a 48 year old. :D

See all of you in Boston

Nice job Rocket. Boy I do enjoy beating the younger ones. They sure seem to be bothered by it too. Keep up the good work!

After a bit of a break, Ran in the 34th annual River Run 2 mile in Wichita. Finished 8th in a time of 10:33. Fastest 2-mile for me in almost 4 years. Dave Keller who is from the city I live in won the event at 41 years of age in a very fast 9:37.

I started a new 2010 thread for training/race reports in the training section if ya'll want to keep this going. The guy we made sick last year with our atta boys can't complain about it being in the wrong section now, but I hope the atta boys continue. I sure need some as my training has been a struggle this year. Post 'em up in the training section and I hope everyone has a good 2010 season(and I see some of you have already had a good start).
