Hi, all

A few masters athletes in San Diego are hoping to interest a local community college in offering a masters age-group track and field class. It might meet twice a week as a credit/no-credit option. Anyone could join, at any experience level. This could help expand the pool of age-groupers in the region and lift the skill levels. The San Diego masters trackfolk are open to ideas.

So help them out. Has any other community college -- aka junior college -- ever offered track and field classes geared to older adults? If so, when and where?

Feel free to comment here or send me a PM (private message) via this Forum. I'll forward your wisdom to the parties involved.

A good way to maybe get a J.C. to implement a masters T&F class is if they have, let's say, four home meets in a season, ask the A.D. or head coach if they would allow masters to offer their services or help in the officiating, physical help, as in removing and setting up hurdles, raking pits, pulling tape, ect. in exchange for being able to attend a couple of practices a week for one month or two, to get some input from coaches. The only set back I see is the college having insurance concerns in case an elderly athlete has some sort of mishap. Hope that was of help...Milt

I have the luck of being able to run with our local juco team. We also have many small college meets, and even a few div 1 NCAA schools, that let me run unattached. at 48 years old I take a pretty good beating at times but 2 years ago three of my four fastest 1500m's came in those meets. The coaches are great and the students have always supported my efforts. I've been doing it for about 5 years and it's been great.
