A friend suggested that this site pick a Masters Athlete of the Decade -- a worldwide honor. Since I don't have a blue-ribbon panel like Track & Field News or member papers like The Associated Press, I'm throwing the question out to all of you.

How to choose? Well, that's a toughie.

T&FN picks its male and female Athletes of the Year by examining titles won, sequence of marks and other parameters like head-to-head competition.

But on a worldwide basis, masters rarely meet head-to-head more than a few times. And not all attend WMA world meets. They just amaze with world records again and again.

At the risk of making this an America-centric popularity contest, I'm offering a poll of the usual suspects. If I've left anyone out, just post a comment to nominate one.

I'm purposefully leaving out elite open athletes over 35 who don't compete in masters, since I can't keep track of them all. They include Jeff Hartwig, Merlene Ottey, Allen Johnson, Gail Devers, Stacy Dragila, Haile Gebreselassie and tons of throwers.

This is just for fun anyway.

Ken,

I'd vote in this if your list wasn't just "a bit" skeded to the USA. No Enrico Saraceni, Steve Peters etc on offer?

For me the best masters women is Merlène Ottey and the best masters men is Ed Whitlock .

No one of them is in your list

It is difficult to choose an athlete of the decade because the sport is so diversified. How do you choose between a specialist or elite open athlete such Stacy Dragila and athletes, such as Bill Collins, Phil Rascher, or Bob Ward, who were excellent in many events? Also, most Americans don't know much about athletes from countries where track and field is more popular than in the US. My vote is for Ken Stone because of his significant contribution to masters track and field during the past ten years.

I vote for Nadine O'connor. Anyone that can break 8000 in the Decathlon is my AOTY

Ken, try this poll in a "write in" format. Just a suggestion.

Geez, Ken, and you're always on about Stan Perkins being a homer.
There is some very, very good athletes on your list, but it is not
nearly inclusive enough.

Hey Ken

I'm not familiar with everyone on this list but how about John Hinton. A 3:56 record 1500, 1:56 800 and 15:00 5K for the 45 group is very impressive. I also think the 45 age group is the most competitive group, although 40 very close.
Phil, Nolan ,and Tony are great runners. I aspire to achieve those kind of results.
