I just stumbled onto this great website. Recently I've decided to "unretire" and return to running after many years. I ran XC and track in high school with PR's:

400m- 54 sec
800m - 2:03
1600m- 4:26
3200m- 9:43
10K road- 35:02

15:55 at Crystal Springs (for you Northern CA runners who know that famous 2.95 mi XC course!)

I wish I had run in college but I got sidetracked in my early 20s. I'm 41 years old now. At the end of 2009 after many years of laziness, bad diet, and no exercise my weight maxed out at 226 lbs. Ugh. I decided I needed a change of lifestyle. So I slowly started running again in late March. I just ran an 8 mile race last weekend (very slowly!). My weight is now down to 213 lb and dropping (hope to eventually get to 180-185 lbs). I may do some summer all-comers meets and some XC races in the fall.

I just wanted to say "hi" to everyone and I look forward to swapping old running "war" stories. :D

Welcome back, Runner!

Your weight loss is great progress. You'll see your times come down even more as you get closer to 185.

Be aware that many masters tracksters report they improve for two or three years after returning to the game. So your best marks might not be until 2012 or 2013.

It's all about staying in the game and making friends!

Thanks Ken!

I plan to take this nice and very slow. Right now my main focus is to get my weight down. I've set ultimate goals of 5:00 mile and 10:30 2-miler. I'm not sure if those time are even realistic at all at my age but I'll have fun trying. :D I look forward to meeting more old foogies like myself here at masterstrack.com

Welcome back runner. Have fun, enjoy the process, take it slow, avoid injury. I think you're times are possible in the next couple of years. Go for it!

I live down the street from Crystal Springs. Dave Robertson has been one of my better friends since college days.

I throw now, so come on down to Los Gatos for the summer all-comers and have fun.

This past week my wife and I started working out at local Crossfit "gym". They offer a free one week class to allow people to check it out. The workouts are pretty intense. For those who don't know "Crossfit" is a strength and fitness program.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrossFit

I hope to use this as a supplementary strength training and conditioning program to augment my running and to lose weight faster. :D A friend of mine and her fiance started the program last fall. By December she lost 20 lbs and he lost 40 lbs!

Good news: Weight is down to 205 lbs

Bad News: I strained my back!

Ugh. It's an old injury and I went to go see a chiropractor last Friday. It's getting better. My wife is training to be a massage therapist and she is giving me some great massages. :D

Yesterday I paced a friend in a 5K time trial. After the run I decided to race another friend who ran 5K as well in a 400 m dash. I knew he would beat me since he was a 49.6 400 m man in high school. But I wanted to know how fast I could run a 400 after all these years. I had no idea really. I knew I probably couldn't break 70 seconds. And I didn't! I ran 78 seconds. My body felt really awkward trying to sprint and I was really winded over the last 120 meters. My friend ran 71 seconds and he still had that beautiful sprinter's form even at age 40. I have A LOT of work to do if I want to break 5:00 for the mile one day!

It'll happen, just take it slow and stick with it! When I ran my first 400 4 yrs ago after a 20-yr hiatus I ran a 71. Yesterday at the Hayward I ran 53.96 It takes a long time for the body to adapt.
