Nearly every Saturday of the year, Wayne Shaffer and UC Santa Cruz Coach Geoff Foley host a throws meet at Shaffer Park in Santa Cruz, CA. All throwing events are contested. Shaffer Park has a magnificent throwing facility in a beautiful setting. The meets are open to anyone and host athletes ranging from high school kids to masters. This would be a good place for USATF to spend some of its money because the meets promote the sport at all levels. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: UCSC Throwers’ Meet This Saturday, January 15th Saturday January 15th the UCSC Throwers’ Meet will be contested at Shaffer Park, Pasatiempo exit, Highway 17 in Santa Cruz. Shaffer Park throwing will begin at 10:00AM. Through most of January and February the throwing schedule at Shaffer Park will be split with weights, hammer and javelin contested at Shaffer and shot and discus thrown at the Los Gatos All-Comers meet at Los Gatos High School. Any and all ages and / or levels of experience are welcome. Shot Put begins at Los Gatos at about 12:30 or 1:00PM and discus follows the conclusion of shot. To date, UCSC has not had to charge an entry fee but there is a $1 “clunk charge” for throws that hit the throwing cage to defray maintenance cost.
