If one is competing in the decathlon, and chooses to zero point an event - is it a violation of the "honest participation" (142.3) rule?

I guess it would depend on the reason for the zero point event. I once zero pointed the hurdles after straining my knee the day before, but completed the race in 50 seconds by jogging and stepping over the hurdles. Reality was I couldn't "leap" over the hurdles anyway.

I thought that masters are allowed to skip an event. But am not sure.

It would basically be choosing to zero point the pole vault - because there is just no possibility of me learning to pole vault.

Yeah... it looks like under rule 200.8 I'm screwed and will have to at least make an attempt to vault.

200.8
A competitor failing to attempt to start or take a trial in any event of the competition
shall not be allowed to participate in any following events. Such competitor
shall not be included in the final placing or scoring, but shall have his/
her performances before withdrawing recorded in the results of the competition.
Any competitor deciding to withdraw from the competition shall immediately
inform the Referee of his/her decision to do so.

I don't see any Masters exception to this rule.

I see I was wrong, the WMA rules say:

(3) In Masters Combined Events, IAAF Rule 200(8) (IAAF Handbook 2002-2003) shall apply.

And the reason you can't grab a pole and at least run the down the runway carrying the pole is?

I see that as ethically a violation of the honest participation rule.

I'm currently hunting around for someone in the area to teach me enough to at least give it a go.

I still don't see what the problem is. Borrow a pole and grab a 30 second lesson on how and where to hold it. Run with it, try and get it in the pit and either go up or don't up. That's EXACTLY what I did in my first dec 2 years ago and somehow finagled a way over 2.0 meters. If you don't get over, you tried, your conscience is clear, and you don't get DQed. I also gave you the example I gave with the hurdles in one competition. I literally could not put pressure on my plant leg so I straddled each hurdle getting over and ran to each one in doing so.

Another item is that I know exactly how you feel with the vault because I do not practice it, have never practiced it, and do not have the facility available to me where I can learn. I just do the best I can.

You will see zero point often in the 1500, PV and Hurdles

I would guess the 1500 and Hurdles since if nursing an injury real hard to get many point without further damage - look at Chris Bates this year - hobble the 1500 virtually no points - could have stopped after starting because of the injury and still would have scored - only zero instead of about 10 pts

I made it thru 300m and stopped before it got to the point the rest of the summer would be shot - took the zero points

Also see it is now in 142.4 and the last Note (ii) states the effort part will not apply to Combined Event Individual Events

Thus you must start a race or take an attempt -- take one step - get on the runway - etc.

Exactly. Last year at nationals, one of my competitors pulled his hamstring in the 200. He was able to throw the discus but when he got to the 1500, once the gun went off he walked past the starting line right onto the infield. Nobody thought any less of him and we all knew he was clearly incapable of running.
