Post subject:  Advice for throwers at World Championships

Advice on meet:I have competed in 5 World Championships and won medals in each (rotator cuff surgery this year and won't be competing).

Come to the meet prepared: make sure you have your number, team jersey, and field pass. You don't want to worry about this stuff at the stadium. Concentrate on the basics, such as getting feet down fast (discus) and landing on bent right knee with discus back. Check out the field for focal points and circle consistency. Know the latest time schedule.
Drug testing: make sure you are not taking any medication on the banned list. Old people often take drugs to treat asthma, sleep apnea, and hypertension that are on the banned list. Be mindful of sports supplements— some contain banned substances for which you will be held responsible.
Trials: get your qualifying mark on the first throw and then go back to your hotel room. You can expect 100+ degree weather. Save your strength.
Finals: Concentrate on consistency. Get a good throw early and then dial it up. Throw far. People take this meet very seriously and have come to win.

This is a wonderful experience. We should be thankful that we are still doing things we did when we were 16 years old!
