No masters competition this year. Considering the fiasco the event was last year, I'm not shedding tears.

I hadn't heard that last years event was a fiasco, but would be interested to know what happened.

It couldn't have been any worse than this year's CA Senior Games at Stanford (not that it reflects poorly on Stanford U., which was gracious in allowing us to use the facilities). Just imagine running a 5K "road race" on the track, while being responsible for counting your own laps without any lap/split times being called out, AND having to raise your hand as you crossed the finish line so that your finish time could be officially recorded. No joke.

How about a USATF sanctioned event using volunteer high school kids with no idea what to do, officating field events and meet management not having any idea that people were supposed to race in age groups on the track?

At the long jump the poor girl had no idea how to measure the jump. Not her fault, she should have been trained. For the 100 meters, not only did it run 2 hours late (with a 9am start time no less) but the entire heat setup just took random entrants and grouped them for heats. It wasn't until people started speaking up that they get the hint that there was a problem.

In all, it fell on the event organizers, because when you get down to it, it wasn't just a track meet, or a California State Games thing, it was a State Games of America event and in the overall picture from their point of view, this was a small portion of the entire State Games of America sporting event with masters track being just a small segment of one sport in the entire sporting event.

That said, I don't know how you could have a sanctioned meet and nobody had a clue what to do. A far cry from the World Championships in Sac a month earlier.
