I'm just getting back into track & field after a 38 year lay off. I last sprinted and pole vaulted (avatar) in 1974 during high school. I'm 56 now and looking forward to continued training and then competing once again in those events here in Colorado. I've found a good coach and have been at it about a month so far. I hope to learn a few thing here that will be helpful.

Good luck, Mike. Be patient, persistent and listen to your body. After a 16 year hiatus, I returned to running in 2009, but didn't enter a competition until 2011. I have made slow, steady progress, I've avoided injury, and more importantly I am having a lot of fun.

Please keep us abreast of your progress.

BTW, that is a very cool avatar photo.

Welcome back Mike.

Just want to emphasize what the others have said here.....Take it nice and slow in your comeback. Listen to and respect your body.

I made the mistake of coming back to fast in August of 2011 after a measly 5 weeks of training and boy did I pay the price - 2nd degree calf muscle tear.

That injury forced me to take about 8 weeks from training. But I learned my lesson....The hard way.

Look forward to meeting you at a few meets in Colorado.

Ace Bond

Thanks guys. Having a blast the past two months and have stayed injury free. I'm pretty active outside of track (hiking and horses), and I make sure to warm up properly. Cleared 8'6" the other day so I'm happy with my progress so far. BUT, I still have a ways to go to get where I want to be. First indoor meet for pole vault is December 15th.

Ace - definitely hope to see you at meets this year!

P.S. Avatar is from a wet high school practice in 1974 - the last time I vaulted until September of 2012.
