When I talk to runners who come back from vacation the story is usually the same. They had a great time, ate to much, and maybe got one run in. Your vacation is an opportunity to get some quality runs in. It's a different area with new routes and different terrain.
Where I live it's totally flat, I have to go to an overpass for a hill. I just got back from vacation in Pigeon Forge Tennessee home of the Smokey Mountains. They have hills, big hills so I knew this was the time to get in some quality hill work. I got 2 days of hill work along with hiking later each day. I ran 2 easy days after each hill day which worked well.
This could be reversed where you have hills and come to a flat area like mine. This would be a great time for a 8-10 miler with 5@marathon pace or a 3 mile Tempo run. Even if you need a vacation from running, go ahead in run and take your vacation from running when you get back, but you will probably feel energized and not want to.
