Al Oerter wrote the forward to a book I wrote about Olympic athletes. I interviewed him during the the US Sports Festival in Colorado Springs in 1980. His approach to sport accounted for much of his success. He said that he prepared for all situations. He went out of his way to train in wet or cold weather or with the circle full of water or slippery leaves. He had precise goals for strength, speed, and power. He said that he always felt confident because he was thoroughly prepared. He told me,"I never make excuses."

He was a great champion and a nice person.
