Amino Acid-Creatine Supplement No Better Than Carbs for Preventing Fatigue
Amino acids and creatine monohydrate supplements have proven benefits for intensely training athletes. Amino acids serve as the building blocks for protein synthesis and they also trigger signaling proteins that increase the rate of protein synthesis in muscle cells. Creatine monohydrate has similar effects. Creatine increases muscle creatine phosphate levels, which is critical for providing energy for high intensity training and protein synthesis. Like amino acids, increased creatine levels also stimulate signaling proteins to accelerate protein synthesis. Nicholas Ratamess and co-workers from the College of New Jersey found that Amino Shooter— a supplement containing essential amino acids, creatine, taurine, caffeine, and glucuronolactone— provided no more benefits than maltodextrin (glucose polymer) in preventing fatigue during a weight training workout or influencing growth hormone or testosterone levels.
