Here's a bit of trivia for you. The first weight pentathlon was held in 1956, but the year before, the event, then called the "All-Around Weight Throwing Competition", consisted of 8 events. So the weight pentathlon started out as a weight octathlon.

It was held at Hinchliffe Stadium, New Jersey on September 10, 1955 and started at noon. The contested events were 16lb hammer, 16lb shot, 12lb shot, caber, 2k discus, 56lb weight, 800g javelin, and 35lb weight.

It was won by Stew Thompson with 8124 points, followed by Bob Backus, Harold Connoly, Bill Bangert, Ken Bantum, Al Hall, Marty Engel, Steve Dillon, Vince Gattullo, James Feeney, and Tom Pagani.

Side note: Harold Connolly won the 16lb hammer throw with a toss of 199' 11". He took an extra throw in the competition to try to better his World Record of 206' 10" but came up just a few inches short.
