For the past few years we've held the Sisu Foundation 800 Meter Challenge Race in the Phoenix, AZ area in early March. It's an unusual event for several reasons, notably, we offer substantial prize money to the age-adjusted winners. Last year Nolan Shaheed and Horace Grant ran what were at the time the two fastest M55 800s in the world there, and at least two other marks from that event are still "top ten" in other age groups for this past year.

In the past we've run our race at local Masters or open meets, using their officials, etc. As we look to upgrade the Sisu Challenge we've been speaking with Arizona State University about affiliating with one of their regular collegiate meets at ASU Stadium, in order to find a stable "home" for the race, upgrade our venue (Mondo track), and dramatically increase the number of spectators and visibility. They're interested, but have limited space still available.

The only two certain options are the ASU Invitational on March 28, and a meet in mid to late May. Our first choice, the Sun Angel meet in mid-April, is a possibility, but not likely given their full schedule in 2009. Our dilemma is that the March 28 date is only a week after Masters Indoor Nationals.

I'd like to ask US middle distance runners if they'd be more likely to attend the March 28 date at ASU, the mid-May date at ASU, or would prefer we continue at the beginning of March as a tune-up for nationals (not at ASU).

Thanks,

Doug Thompson
