It sounds to me like the thrower is bowling the javelin - my guess would be that the arm is straight, then the arm and hand drop when they land to throw and then the arm swings out to the side rather then over the line of the shoulders. The solution: keep the arm and hand high, point down and practice throwing and topping the javelin so it goes into the ground at short range.
The best thing for you do is film the throw from the side and from behind and then post it on Youtube so I can give you an exact diagnosis and possible solution.

When I release the javelin the tail of the implement kicks out so bad that it practicaly lands sideways. When I release I feel a lot of pressure on my middle and ring finger of the release hand. I use a standard grip with the index resting on the chord, thum facing towards back of implement. Any suggestions to get a straighter flight? Thanks

It can have many causes. Control the position of the tip of the javelin visually, it should be close to your cheeks as long as possible. But it can also be a twist of the hand at the start of the arm swing, or some twist later on. It can also be that the moment of throw off is a bit too late. The position of the hand at throw off should not be in front of the shoulder

Thanks. Your last point is interesting. Returning to throws at 55 I'm finding that certain body movements have pretty much locked up. Thinking of the kinetic chain, I'm sure my upper body on the throwing side needs to loosen up a lot. I have all winter to work on it.
